Summer 2011 Workshops for Adults

The Summer 2011 Semester begins Monday, July 11th, 2011 and continues until Saturday, August 20th, 2011.

Basic Figure Sculpture [AWSU-5] | Mr. Christopher Smith

This class will introduce students to creating sculpture from models. Students need to bring their own armatures, or buy them in Fleisher’s school store. No prior experience necessary.

Ceramic Tile and Mosaic [AWSU-11] | Ms. Carol Stirton-Broad

Students will use press molds in combination with other mosaic techniques to create finished pieces. All skill levels are welcome at Fleisher Art Memorial.

Photography Darkroom Open Studio is for experienced photographers who need time in the darkroom to develop film and print negatives. Participants must have technical proficiency, be capable of working independently, and have a valid Fleisher membership. First time open studio users must participate in an orientation.
Tuition: $100 for those previously approved for studio use, or $130 for new participants (includes orientation session).

Drawing the Clothed Figure [AWSU-20] | Mr. David Berger

This course is ideal for students interested in the figure and portraiture. Through both short and long poses utilizing the clothed and/or costumed model this course addresses gesture, proportion and relation of figure to ground. Various mediums will be used and drawing techniques will be demonstrated.

Kiln Fired Glass [AWSU-31] | Ms. Elaine Erne

This class will provide an introduction to kiln fired glass. Students will learn about the properties of glass and explore annealing and mold making. No prior experience necessary.

Shibori Dyeing [AWSU-43] | Mrs. Marie Elcin

Known as the ancient Japanese art of resist dyeing, Shibori offers exciting possibilities for patterning on cloth. Techniques such as stitch-resist, clamp-resist, pole-wrapping, and binding will be explored on cotton and silk fabrics for the creation of fashion, decorative, or fine-art use.

Still-Life Painting Open Studio [AWSU-50] | monitor

Figure Sculpture Modeling; Advanced [AWSU-26] | Mr. Christopher Smith

This course will give the advanced student a more comprehensive approach to modeling form. Students will learn to see and think with geometry when beginning a sculpture. Later, learn to bring the form out to the large planes and fronts all the while keeping the forms and modeling open until the final stages of completion. This course will teach the craft of modeling form using the human torso and head as subject matter.

This workshop focuses on the unique properties of acrylic paint. Through the use of still life, photo reference, and figure study, a methodical approach to constructing an acrylic painting is demonstrated. No painting background is necessary, but drawing experience is recommended. Class size limited to 14 students.

Japanese Wood Block Printing [AWSU-30] | Ms. Katie Baldwin

Learn how to achieve multiple colors in a woodblock image with perfect registration while using the traditional technique of Japanese Woodblock printing. This workshop will be an introduction to the printing process moku hanga, which uses water-based pigments (or sumi ink), a kento registration method, and is printed by hand with a baren. Students will learn about the tools, materials, carving sequence and printing methods associated with this process images.

Pronto Plates [AWSU-40] | Ms. Elaine Erne

Pronto, or Smart Plates, give the look of stone lithographic prints but without the grinding and etching. Draw images directly on the plate with any waterproof material or transfer photocopies for image-making. This is a really easy way to learn the lithographic process!

This workshop is offered for experienced silkscreen printers who wish to work in an instructed studio environment. Students develop high quality editions on paper, fabric, or other media. Silkscreen experience required.

Softie Sculpture [AWSU-48] | Mrs. Marie Elcin

From softies to Claes Oldenburg, sewn and stuffed sculpture is a fun and versatile medium. Starting with construction of basic 3-dimensional forms, you will learn pattern-making, embellishment, and hand- and machine-sewing techniques to realize your creations in fabric. Shared sewing machines are available, but students may bring their own portable sewing machines if desired.

Still Life Painting [AWSU-49] | Mr. David Berger

Ideal for beginners as well as advanced students, this course explores the world of oil painting through the genre of still life. Under-painting, over-painting, composition and color mixing will all be addressed. Still life set ups will last 2-3 weeks affording students a longer amount of time to paint.

Additional studio access will be available from Monday through Thursday between 10:00am and 4:00pm from August 8 through August 19th.

This class builds upon existing photography skills to enable students to produce high-quality art prints. Topics include contemporary art photography, digital restoration, advanced image enhancement, and much more. General computer skills and familiarity with Photoshop Elements® or CS3® is required.

Explore a range of 3-dimensional working methods, using clay to sculpt a variety of subject matter, starting with studies of organic and geometric forms and culmination in basic portrait sculpture. Each piece will be sculpted in clay and fired at the end of the semester.

This course will focus on understanding the human body through the lens of anatomy. Through visual analysis students will learn how to break down the human form into its component parts to better understand the body in space. Anatomy will be taught with emphasis placed on discovering the inherent repetition of form and pattern seen throughout the human body.
