Sanctuary Series: Drawing the Figure in Elizabethan Costume

Join us for a night of free figure drawing in the Sanctuary. Fleisher teaching artist Clarissa Shanahan will begin the evening with a short demonstration and helpful tips on drawing the figure in costume. Clarissa will also lead a figure drawing evening with a very exciting guest model: Christine Doidge, the talented actress from the Fringe Festival performance  Monarch.  Our model will be elegantly dressed in Elizabethan costume and the Sanctuary will be set up with easels and lights. Please bring your own drawing pads and drawing utensils!

Clarissa Shanahan is a Philadelphia-based fine and decorative artist. Originally from New York, Clarissa studied painting at the New York Academy of Art, The Art Students League, and the Isabel O’Neal Studio on full scholarship. She holds a BFA from University of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and is a Bread Scholar, a merit based full scholarship from UPenn, the first Pafa/UPenn student ever to be awarded. She has been an adjunct faculty member of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts since 2000, teaching varied subjects such as Medieval manuscript illumination, encaustic painting, symbolism of color, and film-related painting classes. Clarissa is represented by Gravers Lane Gallery in Philadelphia, and has exhibited her work in shows around the country. Her work is included in numerous private collections.

Monarch  is one woman’s retelling of the story of Queen Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots. Fleisher’s beautiful sanctuary sets the stage for  past to become present. Fill in the blanks of history (with an irreverent dose of fiction) as a centuries old rivalry comes to a head. Queens will rage. Crowns will fall. Tickets are offered on a pay what you wish basis. Learn more about showtimes tickets.

The Sanctuary Series was developed in support of Fleisher’s mission to make art accessible to everyone. The series provides low-commitment learning experience for our creative community to explore its interest in the arts. Supporting and supplementing Fleisher’s regular class and workshop offerings, Sanctuary Series events range from artist talks, film screenings, musical and dance performances, as well as hands on workshops. The Sanctuary Series is free and open to the public.
