Sanctuary Series: Foundations of Drawing Book Signing with Al Gury

Al Gury, a Fleisher faculty member and chair of the painting department at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, has recently published Foundations of Drawing, a comprehensive guide to drawing as an art form including historical information, materials and technique, and step-by-step demonstrations. Join us for a discussion about his latest book, a drawing demonstration, and a book signing.

Gury received his BA in fine arts and humanities from Saint Louis University, a certificate of art from PAFA, and an MFA from the University of Delaware. He is a recipient of the Cresson Traveling Fellowship. He is represented by F.A.N. Gallery in Philadelphia. His paintings have been exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the National Capitol in Washington, D.C., Washington and Lee University, the University of Pennsylvania, and at galleries across the country. He writes for American Artists and has published two other books: Alla Prima: A Contemporary Guide to Traditional Direct Painting and Color for Painters: A Guide to Traditions and Practice.

The Sanctuary Series was developed in support of Fleisher’s mission to make art accessible to everyone. The series provides low-commitment learning experiences for our creative community to explore its interest in the arts. Supporting and supplementing Fleisher’s regular class and workshop offerings, Sanctuary Series events range from artist talks, film screenings, musical and dance performances, as well as hands-on workshops. The Sanctuary Series is free and open to the public.
