Using a core palette of colors, learn methods for painting the still-life and figure with solvent-free and easy-to-clean-up acrylic paints. Techniques like blending, layering and impasto are demonstrated, along with a variety of acrylic mediums and modifiers. Drawing experience is recommended.
This Monday class is eight sessions in order to accommodate the two holidays that occur during the winter term: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 21, and Presidents’ Day, February 18. The class will not be held on these days and there will not be no makeup sessions.
What you will learn:
Familiarity with the characteristics of acrylic paints in order to effectively exploit their strengths & limitations
Basic acrylic painting techniques such as layering, blending, and building
Introduction to some of the many types of acrylic painting mediums and other materials used to modify the performance of acrylic paints
Fundamental color mixing and theory
Start the term with these supplies:
Supplies will be discussed in depth at the first class.
One canvas, approximately 10″ X 16″ in size*
Plastic oil painter’s palette, or pad of disposable palette sheet*
Roll of soft paper towels
Painting or palette knife (metal preferred)*
Acrylic fluid matte medium (8 oz.)
Synthetic soft-haired (watercolor) brushes: flat wash: 1/2″, 1″ and 2″, round #2 and #6*
Paints: titanium white, ivory black*
For the rest of the term you will need:
Three canvases approximately 20″ X 16″, or other painting surfaces (options include heavy watercolor paper or archival board prepared with 2 coats of acrylic gesso on both sides)*
Optional fluid gloss medium (8 oz.)
Optional stiff, synthetic bristle brushes in various shapes and sizes*
Paints: yellow ochre, burnt sienna, lemon yellow, or hansa yellow light, cadmium yellow medium (hue), cadmium red medium (hue), (alizarin) crimson, (French) ultramarine blue, cerulean blue (hue)*
