Alla Prima Figure Painting

Alla prima meaning to finish a painting in one sitting, and in each session, over the course of three hours, you will learn about color and tonal harmonies, perspective, application of paint, and composition. You will also develop concentration, intensity of working, and decision making, through specific exercises, while painting.

Fleisher will be closed on Monday, May 28, to observe the Memorial Day holiday. The make-up session will be on June 18.

What you will learn in this class:

  • Getting familiar with “Alla Prima Technique”

  • How to compose a painting from start to finish

  • The basics of color mixing

  • How to see and paint color and value relationships

  • Learning the diverse methods to apply brush strokes

Required supplies:

  • Turpenoid*

  • Medium: Liquin Original*

  • Paper towels

  • Pizza box (or other box to transport wet paintings)

  • Panel sizes: bring three prepared with grey gesso, no smaller than 8 by 10 inches and no bigger that 14 by 16 inches

  • Oil Paints: Giovanni suggests Winton/Windsor & Newton colors (40 ml tube): Cadmium Yellow Light, Indian Yellow, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Red Light, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Dioxazine Purple, French Ultramarine, Titanium White (150 ml), Ivory Black, Permanent Green, Chromium Oxide Green, Yellow Ochre, Raw Sienna, Indian Red, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber*

  • If you already have a color palette that you are familiar and works for you, Giovanni suggests you bring your own colors
