Ceramics: Introduction to Hand Building

Come learn the basic techniques of hand-building and sculptural design in ceramics. Each session will include time for instruction, and for practicing new techniques. Concepts and theories of 3D and 2D design will be covered along with ideas of form and function. Let your hands learn to do whatever your mind can dream up!

Participants must have a valid Fleisher membership. Please note that our tuition-free classes for adults fill very quickly. Due to Fleisher’s Founder’s Award Celebration no evening classes will be held on Wednesday, June 7. Those classes will be made up on Wednesday, June 14.

What you will learn in this class:

  • Basic techniques for hand-building: slab construction, scoring, carving

  • Sculptural concepts including additive and reductive processes

  • Basic Glaze technique

  • Form and function

Required supplies for this class:

  • Hard fettling knife

  • Small plastic container for slip

  • 1/4-inch inexpensive brush for applying slip

  • 1-inch soft brush for glaze

  • Clean-up sponge

  • Needle tool*

  • Soft rubber scraper*

  • Plastic bags (the type used by dry cleaners)
