Four Keys to Basic Drawing (four-day immersive workshop)

Come learn how to observe and draw objects from life, in a realistic style. In-class exercises offer you a step-by-step approach designed to deconstruct life drawing. Working in pencil and charcoal, you will learn four key skills to help you create a successful basic drawing.

What you will learn in this workshop:

  • To make accurate contour line drawings of objects

  • To identify internal axis and alignments of forms and shapes

  • To understand the importance of flat relationships

  • A special technique to establish scale and other relationships between objects

Required supplies:

  • 18” x 24” Strathmore sketchpad or similar white pad of white paper *

  • Graphite drawing pencils: 2B, 3B, 4B *

  • Regular #2 Dixon Ticonderoga pencils with pink erasers (available at Staples) *

  • White drafting eraser (Staedtler Mars) *

  • Compressed charcoal – soft or medium *

  • Blending stumps (optional) *
