Painting Philadelphia’s Waterways (five-day immersive workshop)

The beauty of natural forms has been a continual source of fascination and inspiration for artists. But how do you capture the fresh spontaneity of water and light? This five-day watercolor workshop will allow you to investigate natural themes using the highly expressive and versatile medium of watercolor. Discover essential techniques through instructor demonstrations, and practice painting in Plein Air along the beautiful Schuylkill and Delaware rivers.

What you will learn in this workshop:

  • Improve vitality in your mark making and brushwork

  • Interpret the essential visual components of your subject

  • Gain confidence in working with wet art mediums

  • Explore organic approaches to composition

Required supplies:

  • Pencils: 2B, 2H *

  • Kneaded eraser *

  • Paper towels or rags

  • Mixing dish/dishes or palette

  • Two or more water containers

  • Any water colors you would like to work with (Amy’s recommended brands include: Windsor and Newton, Holbein, l’Aquarelle, da Vinci) in tubes or pan. Have at least two shades of Blue, Red and Yellow plus a brown and Green. Recommended shades: Cobalt Blue, Phathalo Blue-green shade (Winsor Blue), Ultramarine Blue (permanent Blue), Cadmium Red , Bright rose, Quinacridone Red or Alizarin Crimson, Hansa Light or Auerolin Yellow, New Gamboge, Burnt Seinna (brown), Sap green, Phthalo Green or Viridian

  • Watercolor brushes: round tip – a #4 and a #10 and 1-inch flat brush

  • Watercolor paper: block or individual sheets –140lb cold pressed *

  • Water soluble colored pencils and crayons

  • Natural sponge (optional)

  • Liquid masking fluid (optional)

  • Plastic spray bottle (optional)

  • Painters tape (optional)

  • Sunscreen

  • Sun hat/visor

  • Water bottle for hydration

  • Portable chair and/or portable easel (optional)
