Printmaking Techniques: Texture and Tone (four-session workshop)

This workshop will focus on etching techniques that involve developing texture and tone to use in your images through the use of soft ground, lift grounds, and chine collé (a collage technique incorporated during the printing process.) You will develop an image while experimenting with the different printmaking processes to print a limited edition print. Join us in this energetic studio as we work together to create your own individual printed image.

What you will learn in this workshop:

  • Learn about the properties of etching beyond the basics of hard ground line etch and aquatint

  • Learn etching processes that make textures and tones including soft ground and various lift grounds including: sugar, salt, fractint, and crayons

  • Learn how to use chine collé as a color and texture within your print

  • Develop your own image on a plate and print a limited edition

Required supplies:

  • 5” x 7” or larger zinc plate (available in the school store)

  • Newsprint pad

  • 4 sheets of Rives BFK paper

  • Flat textural materials such as lace, plant leaves, etc

  • Pencil
