SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Pintura Básica

SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Painting in 3D
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a demonstration of a very unique technique the artist Claes Gabriel uses to make his colorful and bold sculptural paintings. We’ll learn his process in building a the structural frame\, stretching canvas on a varied angled frame\, and designing and painting the sculptural piece. We’ll also discuss Claes’ recent foray into mural painting and his mural “Boat People.” \nClaes Gabriel is a Philadelphia-based artist from Port-au-Prince\, Haiti. Gabriel immigrated to the States in 1989 and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting and Sculpture at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1999. His three-dimensional paintings ring with the spiritual energy of beings from folklore and his own imagined tales\, capturing a deified presence in each piece. Inspired by modernists such as Frank Stella and Sam Gilliam\, Gabriel’s work lives beyond the confines of a flat wall; he stretches and sews canvases taut over wooden armatures to construct masks and free-standing statues. After considering the natural shape of the piece\, Gabriel uses bright acrylics to pull out patterns\, eyes\, lips\, and personality that seem to rise to the surface of their own free will. Gabriel often says he knows a piece is finished when he can bow to it. \nThis demonstration is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 but is limited to maximum number of 100 participants. Advanced registration is required. The tour will be hosted through Zoom\, which can be accessed on desktop and laptop computers\, as well as mobile devices. We highly recommend downloading the Zoom app to your device in advance. SUMMARY:Havana Time: a Conversation with Dara Haskins & James Claiborne
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia-based curator and cultural worker James Claiborne is joined by visual artist Dara Haskins for a conversation exploring Haskins’ 2019 series of paintings\, entitled Havana Time. This dialogue centers on time both Haskins and Claiborne separately spent in Havana\, Cuba\, and looks to explore issues of normalcy\, visibility\, and community. Produced as a meditation on Haskins’ 2019 residency in Havana\, this series of paintings continues Haskins’ exploration of the Black Queer body\, and is inspired by Afro-Cuban religion and culture\, the stunning backdrop of the city of Havana\, and the community and connections held there by both Haskins and Claiborne. \nThis event is part of Fleisher’s Social Activism Through Art series. It is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 but is limited to maximum number of 100 participants. Advanced registration is required. This event will be hosted through Zoom\, which can be accessed on desktop and laptop computers\, as well as mobile devices. We highly recommend downloading the Zoom app to your device in advance. You will receive a URL to join the discussion after you complete the registration process. \nDara Haskins artist statement:\nMy work has been impacted by the surroundings of living in Vedado and Old Havana Cuba. Originating from an important part of my painting process that lies between connecting historical content to the contemporary spaces\, and how that relationship coexists. Havana Time is my complete reflection of the month I lived there. It is inspired by the Afro-Cuban religion\, African art\, location\, and music. This series explores a reflected story of intimacy\, color\, joy\, and Afro-Cuban culture. From Photographs and sketches\, I composed 16-20 small to large scale oil paintings of surrounding people\, places\, and objects I navigated daily. Throughout history\, the gay black body has been a reflection of racism\, underrepresentation\, and hardship. I am to challenge that reflection by capturing the essence of what day to day may or may not look like manifesting normalcy and transparency in domestic spaces. I challenge the memory of my work by exaggerating color and structure to create an atmosphere as well as physical elements of figures or objects as being seen or not seen that reflect and question identity. \nDara Haskins (b.1992 Baltimore) Has rooted her practice in Philadelphia working primarily in painting oil portraits and figurative oil and mixed media paintings. Addressing the ways the black body has been represented and looked at throughout history\, she challenges the identity of being seen and unseen connecting historical content to contemporary spaces and how that relationship coexists. She is currently working on a series of paintings called quarantine series 2020. It reflects isolation\, relationships\, and intimacy throughout figurative oil self-portrait paintings in areas in her home and bedroom. Transferring from Anne Arundel community college in 2017 Haskins received her BFA at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2019. Winning the Franklin C. Watkins Memorial Grant for gifted painters in (2019) and The J Henry Scheidt Memorial Travel Scholarship to Cuba in (2019). She currently lives and works in Philadelphia. \nJames Claiborne is the Public Programming Manager for the African American Museum in Philadelphia. Prior to his current position at AAMP\, James served as the Community Engagement Manager for the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance\, Program Manager with First Person Arts\, and the Editor for Visit Philadelphia’s Philly 360 campaign. Currently\, he serves on the Board of Directors for the Philadelphia Cultural Fund\, a non-profit that distributes over $2 million in city funding to the region’s arts organizations. As an independent curator\, James founded the gallery program at Art Sanctuary\, and has presented exhibitions by a range of artists\, including Deborah Willis\, James Dupree\, Amber Arts\, Richard Watson and Barkley Hendricks.

SUMMARY:Social Activism Through Art: Art Sparks with David Greene
DESCRIPTION:In this Zoom event\, Fleisher student David Greene will discuss his journey as an artist through social activism. As a longtime activist and educator\, David understands that art has the potential to inspire community engagement\, meaningful action\, and deepen our connections. How can we empower and uplift one another while striving for a better way of life? How can art ignite problem solving and creative solutions? \nDavid began exploring his talent as an artist in 2017 at the age of 71\, following 10 years of increasingly severe health issues\, including battles against three kinds of cancer. His life’s work as an educator encouraged adults to reflect on and learn from their experiences. In this\, his first formal exhibit\, David presents paintings that are reflections of his own life and work in New York\, West Virginia\, and Ohio as a community organizer\, factory worker\, and adult educator. \nKatie Hulihan will be moderating this talk. Katie joined the Fleisher team through a yearlong fellowship with the Quaker Voluntary Service. She is a lifelong art lover from the Philadelphia area. Katie recently graduated from Bryn Mawr College with a degree in film and media production. \nThis event is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 but is limited to a maximum number of 100 participants. Advanced registration is required. The event will be hosted through Zoom\, which can be accessed on desktop and laptop computers\, as well as mobile devices. We highly recommend downloading the Zoom app to your device in advance. SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Vertical Rolls and Boomerangs\, a Video Art History
DESCRIPTION:Video is a regular part of our lives and used by a wide variety of artists today. But\, when did video art come on the scene? What was the difference between video art and experimental film? This lecture will address these and many other questions and will introduce participants to canonical scholarship and works. As we consider these histories\, we will also ask what and who has been included\, what or who has been excluded\, and will speculate together about what video art histories of the future could look like. \nAbout the presenter:\nSuzanne L. Seesman is a Philadelphia-based artist\, writer\, and curator. Her work experiences in education\, labor rights\, cooperative organizing\, and the service industry have a significant influence on her writing and making. Suzanne holds a BFA in sculpture from Ohio University and an MFA from Tyler School of Art and has received awards in recognition and support of her work\, including the Cloud Artist Prize and The Ilya and Emilia Kabakov Fellowship. During the summer of 2015\, she was an artist in residence at The International Ceramics Studio (ICS) in Kecskemet\, Hungary\, and in 2017 She was an artist in residence at the Vermont Studio Center. SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Mosaic Medallions
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a demonstration with mosaic artist and Fleisher teaching artist Claire Brill. Claire will demonstrate a way to make mosaic medallions including the base\, and some of the wondrous variety of materials that can be used. She’ll also demonstrate the cutting and setting (gluing) of tesserae (pieces). \nIn and around her hometown of Media\, Claire first pursued mosaics for their community art potential. After more than 20 large-scale collective installations\, nine years\, and two babies\, Claire now increasingly focuses on her own voice as an artist. Accolades include works hanging in the University of Pennsylvania Museum and selected for the Mosaic Arts International exhibition. SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance - A Day Ends / A Day Begins: Technology as a Language for Empathy
DESCRIPTION:During this interactive\, cross-disciplinary event\, learn about The Fabric Workshop and Museum’s current exhibition\, Samara Golden: Upstairs at Steve’s. Led by museum tour manager Katie Parry and University of Pennsylvania computer and information science doctoral student Ajay Patel\, this event will examine a defining characteristic of our current cultural moment: an overwhelming feeling of isolation coupled with a pervasive\, wired connectivity. Katie will give a short presentation about Samara Golden’s collaboration with FWM that coincided with the unsteadiness 2020 presented\, inviting us to wonder: how can we reflect on our days? How can we understand this moment with empathy? Can technology help us? The events of 2020 impacted the installation of Golden’s work and called for FWM staff to imagine new ways to connect to the public using technology as a tool and a companion. Ajay Patel will discuss the creative process of developing an interactive artificial intelligence platform in response to Golden’s work and its potential to generate empathy\, inspire action\, and conjure hope. \nAjay Patel is currently a Ph.D. student in machine learning at the University of Pennsylvania and the founder of Plasticity\, an AI startup. Recently\, Ajay helped build an AI project for Samara Golden’s exhibit at The Fabric Workshop and Museum. \nKatie Parry is a practicing artist with 20 years of experience in arts education. In her current role as museum tour manager at she imagines tours\, workshops\, and programs to engage all ages. She works in the community to build partnerships that become bridges—connecting contemporary art to all ages. Parry believes that art can serve as a mirror in which concepts such as identity\, loss\, violence\, injustice\, nature\, and love can be reflected within ourselves while we are looking and creating. As an educator\, Parry works towards holding these mirrors up to the light. \nThis event is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 but is limited to a maximum number of 100 participants. Advanced registration is required. The event will be hosted through Zoom\, which can be accessed on desktop and laptop computers\, as well as mobile devices. SUMMARY:Social Activism Through Art: Jewelry Settings
DESCRIPTION:In this Zoom Event\, Kathryn Kelly will share with us her journey from Philadelphia artist\, architect\, woodworker\, and former Fleisher student to Central Saint Martins in London\, a mecca for design. She will discuss her motivations and her drive to pursue higher education regardless of challenges along the way. She will showcase her work and her process while discussing sources of inspiration. A question and answer period will follow Kathryn’s presentation. \nKathryn Kelly is a jewelry designer from Pennsylvania whose extensive experience in the fields of architecture and woodworking informs her designs\, both aesthetically and technically. The daughter of an architect\, woodworker\, and ceramicist\, she incorporates her own experience in each of these crafts into her jewelry designs which are formally influenced by architectural details as well as methods from furniture making. Her jewelry is created in precious materials using a combination of rapid prototyping\, lathe turning\, casting\, and hand fabrication. Integral to her collections are the landscape of wood presentation bases housing the jewelry for display and giving each piece a second life when not being worn. She received a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Penn State University and her master’s degree in jewelry design from Central Saint Martins in London\, from which she graduated in 2019. She is a member of the Women’s Jewelry Association and Ethical Metalsmiths. You will receive a URL to join the event after you complete the registration process.
