SUMMARY:Social Activism Through Art: Art Sparks with David Greene
DESCRIPTION:In this Zoom event\, Fleisher student David Greene will discuss his journey as an artist through social activism. As a longtime activist and educator\, David understands that art has the potential to inspire community engagement\, meaningful action\, and deepen our connections. How can we empower and uplift one another while striving for a better way of life? How can art ignite problem solving and creative solutions? \nDavid began exploring his talent as an artist in 2017 at the age of 71\, following 10 years of increasingly severe health issues\, including battles against three kinds of cancer. His life’s work as an educator encouraged adults to reflect on and learn from their experiences. In this\, his first formal exhibit\, David presents paintings that are reflections of his own life and work in New York\, West Virginia\, and Ohio as a community organizer\, factory worker\, and adult educator. \nKatie Hulihan will be moderating this talk. Katie joined the Fleisher team through a yearlong fellowship with the Quaker Voluntary Service. She is a lifelong art lover from the Philadelphia area. Katie recently graduated from Bryn Mawr College with a degree in film and media production. \nThis event is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 but is limited to a maximum number of 100 participants. Advanced registration is required. The event will be hosted through Zoom\, which can be accessed on desktop and laptop computers\, as well as mobile devices. We highly recommend downloading the Zoom app to your device in advance. SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Vertical Rolls and Boomerangs\, a Video Art History
DESCRIPTION:Video is a regular part of our lives and used by a wide variety of artists today. But\, when did video art come on the scene? What was the difference between video art and experimental film? This lecture will address these and many other questions and will introduce participants to canonical scholarship and works. As we consider these histories\, we will also ask what and who has been included\, what or who has been excluded\, and will speculate together about what video art histories of the future could look like. \nAbout the presenter:\nSuzanne L. Seesman is a Philadelphia-based artist\, writer\, and curator. Her work experiences in education\, labor rights\, cooperative organizing\, and the service industry have a significant influence on her writing and making. Suzanne holds a BFA in sculpture from Ohio University and an MFA from Tyler School of Art and has received awards in recognition and support of her work\, including the Cloud Artist Prize and The Ilya and Emilia Kabakov Fellowship. During the summer of 2015\, she was an artist in residence at The International Ceramics Studio (ICS) in Kecskemet\, Hungary\, and in 2017 She was an artist in residence at the Vermont Studio Center. She teaches courses in visual studies at Tyler School of Art and is an alumnus of the collectively run gallery Vox Populi. Suzanne is currently the artistic director of Friends\, Peace\, and Sanctuary\, a project of Swarthmore College Library. \nThis event is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 but is limited to a maximum number of 100 participants. Advanced registration is required. SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Mosaic Medallions
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a demonstration with mosaic artist and Fleisher teaching artist Claire Brill. Claire will demonstrate a way to make mosaic medallions including the base\, and some of the wondrous variety of materials that can be used. She’ll also demonstrate the cutting and setting (gluing) of tesserae (pieces). \nIn and around her hometown of Media\, Claire first pursued mosaics for their community art potential. After more than 20 large-scale collective installations\, nine years\, and two babies\, Claire now increasingly focuses on her own voice as an artist. Accolades include works hanging in the University of Pennsylvania Museum and selected for the Mosaic Arts International exhibition. Claire’s work is boldly expressive\, marrying her love of nature with the sparkly\, reflective\, deeply colorful\, transparent nature of Dalle de Verre. \nThis event is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 but is limited to a maximum number of 100 participants. Advanced registration is required. The event will be hosted through Zoom\, which can be accessed on desktop and laptop computers\, as well as mobile devices. SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance - A Day Ends / A Day Begins: Technology as a Language for Empathy
DESCRIPTION:During this interactive\, cross-disciplinary event\, learn about The Fabric Workshop and Museum’s current exhibition\, Samara Golden: Upstairs at Steve’s. Led by museum tour manager Katie Parry and University of Pennsylvania computer and information science doctoral student Ajay Patel\, this event will examine a defining characteristic of our current cultural moment: an overwhelming feeling of isolation coupled with a pervasive\, wired connectivity. Katie will give a short presentation about Samara Golden’s collaboration with FWM that coincided with the unsteadiness 2020 presented\, inviting us to wonder: how can we reflect on our days? How can we understand this moment with empathy? Can technology help us? The events of 2020 impacted the installation of Golden’s work and called for FWM staff to imagine new ways to connect to the public using technology as a tool and a companion. Ajay Patel will discuss the creative process of developing an interactive artificial intelligence platform in response to Golden’s work and its potential to generate empathy\, inspire action\, and conjure hope. \nAjay Patel is currently a Ph.D. student in machine learning at the University of Pennsylvania and the founder of Plasticity\, an AI startup. Recently\, Ajay helped build an AI project for Samara Golden’s exhibit at The Fabric Workshop and Museum. \nKatie Parry is a practicing artist with 20 years of experience in arts education. In her current role as museum tour manager at she imagines tours\, workshops\, and programs to engage all ages. She works in the community to build partnerships that become bridges—connecting contemporary art to all ages. Parry believes that art can serve as a mirror in which concepts such as identity\, loss\, violence\, injustice\, nature\, and love can be reflected within ourselves while we are looking and creating. As an educator\, Parry works towards holding these mirrors up to the light. You will receive a URL to join the event after you complete the registration process.

SUMMARY:Social Activism Through Art: Jewelry Settings
DESCRIPTION:In this Zoom Event\, Kathryn Kelly will share with us her journey from Philadelphia artist\, architect\, woodworker\, and former Fleisher student to Central Saint Martins in London\, a mecca for design. She will discuss her motivations and her drive to pursue higher education regardless of challenges along the way. She will showcase her work and her process while discussing sources of inspiration. A question and answer period will follow Kathryn’s presentation. \nKathryn Kelly is a jewelry designer from Pennsylvania whose extensive experience in the fields of architecture and woodworking informs her designs\, both aesthetically and technically. The daughter of an architect\, woodworker\, and ceramicist\, she incorporates her own experience in each of these crafts into her jewelry designs which are formally influenced by architectural details as well as methods from furniture making. Her jewelry is created in precious materials using a combination of rapid prototyping\, lathe turning\, casting\, and hand fabrication. Integral to her collections are the landscape of wood presentation bases housing the jewelry for display and giving each piece a second life when not being worn. She received a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Penn State University and her master’s degree in jewelry design from Central Saint Martins in London\, from which she graduated in 2019. She is a member of the Women’s Jewelry Association and Ethical Metalsmiths. You will receive a URL to join the event after you complete the registration process.

SUMMARY:Afrofuturism and the Heroine's Journey in Contemporary Film with Li Sumpter
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first seminar in the Found in Translation series: Afrofuturism and the Heroine’s Journey in Contemporary Film. A four-week course presented by mythologist and multidisciplinary artist Dr. Li Sumpter\, the seminar will decode the Heroine’s Journey narrative model through the lens of Afrofuturism and contemporary myth and cinema. \nWeekly lectures in this course will explore the power and patterns of archetype and symbol – the building blocks of myth and the imagination. These universal elements of human consciousness are not only the stuff that stories and dreams are made of; they can also inspire movements\, transform culture\, and shape reality. Students will learn how the path of the female protagonist differs from the classic male hero and the common themes\, tropes\, and power dynamics kindred to these two unique journeys. Diving deeper still\, this course examines the trials and gifts\, wounds\, and weapons common to heroines of African and indigenous descent that reflect resonant cultural ideals\, current social issues\, and the signs of the times. \nRegister here.
