SUMMARY:HANDMADE x El Mercado Cultural
DESCRIPTION:Get your holiday shopping done early!  \nFleisher proudly presents HANDMADE\, our annual craft market inviting Philadelphia’s artists and makers to showcase and sell their work in our historic sanctuary. We welcome Cassie Renee Peña\, who will curate our list of 20+ vendors who will be dishing out their wares to those looking for unique and affordable holiday gifts. This year\, HANDMADE will be presented in collaboration with El Mercado Cultural\, a Fleisher initiative focused on sharing creative and marketing resources with Latinx entrepreneurs. \nShoppers can expect high quality handmade goods from a variety of mediums that include fabric\, clay\, glass\, wood\, paper\, and much more.  The show will highlight Fleisher teaching artists and students as well as a selection of local artists and craftsmen.  Stop by our lobby to enjoy coffee from Persimmon Coffee (@persimmoncoffee)! \nAbout the curator \nCassie Renee Peña’s work attempts to reconcile the barbarism of western civilization and its continuous attempt to ‘other’ cultures outside of a Judeo-Christian context through the exploration of iconography\, mythology\, antiquities\, Tinder\, and Jester’s Privilege. While existing in the historical context of American empire decline and the internet\, her work also operates as self-mocking diary entries regarding the complications and navigation of human existence. Utilizing non-European clay coil-building techniques to create ancient Greek forms in porcelain\, a clay body generally associated with wealth\, Peña’s work nods to the history of craft while maintaining a lack of self-serious refinement. She resides in Philadelphia\, PA. \nThis year’s vendors include: \nArtesinA: @artesinagroup \n@artesania_gustemalteca_de_ana \nGoods and Bads: @goodsandbadsstudio \nCynthia Bayer \nHerbal Jawn Apothecary: @herbaljawn \nMason Carter + Olivia Duffy: @masonfromblendini + @PortOlivia \nBy Ren: @by.ren \nUh-Huh Design Studio: @shopuhhuh \nFleisher Art Memorial Open Studio Potters \nFleisher Art Memorial Staff \nFleisher Art Memorial Teen Lounge \nLili Daliessio Designs: @lilidaliessiodesigns \nSignature Books & Accessories: @signature_books \nPejo Goshni by Maria Hernandez: @pejo_goshni \nMoonlight Arte: @moonlight_arte \nGuille \nPatrick Griffin @griffin.pottery \nCharlotte Holt Art: @charlotteholt.art \nFrances Iadarola: @francesiadarola \nV Israel Ceramics: @v_israel_ceramics \nEverywwwhere: @everywwwhere \nRachel Kedinger + Victoria Ahmadizadeh Melendez: @rkedinger + @internet___angel \nKatrina Kopeloff Illustration: @kopeloff \nWho Press’d Press: @whopressdpress \nBox Turtle Press @boxturtlepress \nKaren Kriegel: @karenkriegel \nTombino: @tombinoshop \nLuis: @mochibaybags \nReyna Navarro: @artesani_mundo_de_queen \nCharnelle Nixon: @gift.well001 \nPatricia Patzi Art: @patzi.patzi \nLeslie Richards: @leslie.richards.art \nLost Mirage: @lost.mirage \nMadeline Mae Studios: @madelinemae_studios \nMagic Needles Mari: @magic_needles_mari \nMagico Artemez: @magicoartemez \nMexico Art: @mxheartde \nOur Hope: @_ourhope \nMary Schneider: @marydotart \nJillian Schley: @jillianschley \nGabrielle Silverlight: @gabriellesilverlight \nHolly Simple: @holly_simple \nSmall Print Studio: @_jackie.small \nSpuul: @spuul215 \nJuan Tang Hon: @juandtang \nTenangos Philly: @tenangosphilly \nTrina’s Jabones \nLinda Abd Ulbaki: @creacioneslindausa \nVenbisustore: @venbisustore \nJulieta Zavala: @julietazavala \nJane Zweibel Studio: @janiejanez \n

SUMMARY:Dox to Light: The Life and Works of Dox Thrash Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join Fleisher Art Memorial and the McIntosh Rollins Foundation for the opening reception of Dox to Light: The Life and Works of Dox Thrash Friday\, October 20\, 6–8pm\, featuring live performance by celebrated jazz musicians Robert Kenyatta and Alfie Pollitt! \nThis event is free and open to the public. Registration is encouraged\, but not required. \nDox to Light: The Life and Works of Dox Thrash \nOn view October 20 – November 17\, 2023\nDene M. Louchheim Galleries\nFleisher Art Memorial \nDox to Light: The Life and Works of Dox Thrash features early sketches\, prints\, and more experimental pieces from Dox Thrash’s later years. In addition to highlighting the evolution of Thrash’s style and technique\, the collection illustrates his critical role as a mentor and friend to an entire generation of up-and-coming artists\, and his centrality as a community organizer. \nThis exhibition is made possible through a collaboration with the McIntosh Rollins Foundation\, which manages the collection of Dr. Esther Rollins and David McIntosh. The collection is a unique amalgamation of works by Dox Thrash\, privately gifted to a family that the artist counted among his closest friends. For the McIntosh Rollins family\, Thrash’s art punctuated their lives in a formative way. In sharing this collection with the public for the first time\, they offer an intimate opportunity to experience its collective impact. \nFleisher presents this exhibition as part of its 125th anniversary year programming to highlight its mission of providing art access to Philadelphians regardless of artistic ability or economic means. Thrash’s legacy serves as an enduring inspiration for artists at all stages of their creative pursuits\, including many who frequent Fleisher’s classrooms and studios to this day. \nDox to Light: The Life and Works of Dox Thrash is made possible by the generous support of the Edna W. Andrade Fund of the Philadelphia Foundation. The exhibition is organized by the McIntosh Rollins Foundation in collaboration with Fleisher Art Memorial\, with contributions from Dolan/Maxwell. \nImage: Dox Thrash\, Grinder (detail)\, c. 1940\, carborundum mezzotint\, 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches\, courtesy of the McIntosh Rollins Foundation.
