SUMMARY:Common Space - There is No There: Mixed Fibers Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Through the Common Space initiative\, Fleisher is partnering with One Book\, One Philadelphia\, the signature program of the Free Library that promotes literacy\, library usage\, and civic dialogue by encouraging the entire greater Philadelphia area to come together through reading and discussing a single book. From January 22 to March 18\, nearly 100 events and programs will center on Tommy Orange’s award-winning novel\, There There. \nThrough the art of knitting you will explore the themes of gentrification and displacement making a collective work of art. Using knitting looms and knit picks/hooks you will each make a small part of a larger piece inspired by the flower of the Franklin Tree (Franklinia Alatamaha): The Franklin Tree was a flowering tree native only to the Altahama River valley in Georgia\, extinct in the wild since the early 19th century. All the Franklin Trees known to exist today are descended from seed collected by William Bartram and propagated at Bartram’s Garden in Philadelphia. If time permits\, the participants will incorporate the smaller pieces made during the workshop into a large yarn installation. A future date for installing the work in an outdoor setting will also be decided. This workshop hopes to promote healing through art and to share the story of preservation leading to a beautiful tomorrow. We have limited knitting looms and hooks so please bring your own if you have them. If you have any yarn donations in white\, yellow\, or green\, we would gladly accept them. \nFree registration is required. Event capacity is limited to 30\, due to the amount of available looms. If you can bring your own\, please contact gsilva@fleisher.org to be added to the waitlist. \nAbout the artist:\nJessica Curtaz is a Philadelphia-based street artist and arts advocate. She transforms public space through installing crocheted weeds\, insects\, real and imaginary creatures\, and other\, over-sized flora and fauna onto the urban landscape\, bringing a feminized craft out of the home and onto the streets. \nFleisher’s new Common Space initiative gives local organizations and artist collectives ‘the keys’ to Fleisher’s historic Sanctuary to present culturally diverse\, community-driven projects. Designed to support Philadelphia-area performance artists by providing access to a unique venue and to help cultivate new audiences for their work\, Common Space embodies our founder’s vision of the Sanctuary as a public space devoted to the appreciation and pursuit of art. All programs in this series are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:ARTZ at Fleisher
DESCRIPTION:ARTZ at Fleisher is a partnership between ARTZ Philadelphia and Fleisher Art memorial that provides free monthly art experiences for people living with dementia and their caregivers\, made possible by the Arleen Weinstein Fund for Creative Aging. These sessions take place in Fleisher’s Dene M. Louchheim Galleries. \nARTZ Philadelphia partners with cultural venues throughout Greater Philadelphia to offer informal\, highly interactive arts-based conversation programs for people living with dementia and those they love. Through the vehicle of arts-based conversation\, facilitated programs enhance the self-esteem of those participating (with and without dementia) and help to build a new communities of friends. \nPrograms are free of charge\, but pre-registration is required to ensure an intimate and comfortable experience for all. Click here to register for this session. \nAbout the facilitator:\nSusan Shifrin\, executive director of Artz Philly\, is an art historian\, curator\, and educator by training. She received her Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr College and has worked at museums up and down the East Coast. She was inspired to start ARTZ Philadelphia after having hosted programs for visitors with dementia. She was moved as she saw them come to life in the galleries\, talking about art with each other\, their caregivers and museum staff. Art became their vehicle for self-expression\, interaction\, creativity\, mutual respect\, and joy. Shifrin publishes on the intersections of the arts and dementia and has spoken and keynoted at professional conferences both in the United States and abroad.

SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Studio Tour with Darla Jackson
DESCRIPTION:Join us Wednesday\, April 1\, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. as Fleisher launches its series of online learning and community building programs\, Fleisher From a Distance. We’ll begin with an exciting tour of Darla Jackson’s sculpture studio. During the tour\, you will see where Darla creates her work\, see some of the new pieces she has created\, and ask questions about her work and process. \nSince her graduation from Moore College of Art & Design in 2003\, Darla has been teaching and exhibiting her work in Philadelphia and beyond. Her work has been exhibited at the Philadelphia Art Alliance\, Seraphin Gallery\, the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, and venues in California\, New Jersey\, Washington\, D.C.\, and Belgium. For more than 12 years\, Darla has led popular Fleisher classes such as Sculptural Forms and Animal Sculpture and was featured in Fleisher’s galleries as a Wind Challenge artist. In 2011\, Darla was named a winner of the Knight Arts Challenge Philadelphia. \n“My sculpture is an exploration of human emotions where I use animal forms as stand ins for humans\,” Darla says of her work. “In order to express these emotions\, I introduce recognizable visual objects\, or symbols\, and combine them with other elements to create a duality. Through the anthropomorphism of animals\, use of strong body language and symbolism\, I can convey these emotions and ideas in a way that is more approachable for viewers. The end result is familiarity with an oddness that makes it compelling.” \nThis tour is free and open to the public\, but it is limited to maximum number of 100 participants. Please click here to complete a brief registration so we can share the tour’s details and keep you informed of future offerings. The tour will be hosted through Zoom\, which can be accessed on desktop and laptop computers\, as well as mobile devices. We highly recommend downloading the Zoom app to your device in advance. \n\nZoom meeting info:\n\n\nJoin here: https://zoom.us/j/612843187\n\n\nMeeting ID: 612 843 187

SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: A Painting in One Session with Giovanni Casadei
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for another installment of Fleisher From a Distance\, our series of online learning and community building programs. Discover the energy of alla prima painting\, a traditional technique of finishing a painting in one sitting with Fleisher teaching artist Giovanni Casadei. In this demonstration\, learn how this painting method can help develop concentration and improve decision making while exploring the fundamentals of color\, composition\, and paint application. SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Designing and Starting a Mosaic with Carol Stirton-Broad
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for another installment of Fleisher From a Distance\, our series of online learning and community building programs. Curious about mosaic? Here is your chance to see the process of designing and starting a mosaic from scratch and tips on creating mosaics with limited tools at home. Join teaching artist Carol Stirton-Broad as she demonstrates the basic tools and techniques of mosaic arts. \nCarol has taught ceramic tile and mosaic workshops at Fleisher for several years. In addition to her classes at Fleisher\, she teaches at Main Line Art Center and Abington Art Center. Carol’s work has been exhibited in many locations\, including: Abington Art Center\, Ariana Gallery\, Fleisher\, Main Line Art Center\, Philadelphia Art Alliance\, and Tyler School of Art\, among others. \nOf her teaching philosophy\, Carol says\, “I believe that art is as important a form of communication as the spoken or written word. Sometimes the visual arts are the only way that the verbally inexpressible can be conveyed. All of us can be enriched both by a better understanding of — and a greater freedom to create — art. In my classes I try to offer new skills\, the freedom both to succeed and to fail\, and in an environment of trust and support. I am happy to say that I have never had to grade anyone\, adult or child\, and that I am delighted by artistic rule breakers of all ages.” \nThis demonstration is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 but is limited to maximum number of 100 participants. Your brush should have a very springy tip\, such as a sable watercolor brush like a DaVinci #4 Maestro series\, for example. Or you can just choose to watch and relax! \nMargaret paints and draws highly detailed\, color-driven\, textural botanical paintings. Margaret earned a BFA in communications design at Kutztown University in 1988. Her experience as a designer and illustrator have provided a solid foundation for further studies of plant life and botanical art techniques\, and Margaret was awarded her certificate in botanical art and illustration\, with distinction\, from The New York Botanical Garden in June 2013. Margaret is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists\, as well as the Philadelphia Society of Botanical Illustrators\, and has exhibited with both groups. Since January 2012\, Margaret has been the editor/designer of The Botanical Artist\, the quarterly journal and official publication of the American Society of Botanical Artists. She teaches botanical art in southeastern Pennsylvania\, Delaware\, and New York\, as well as at workshops around the country. Margaret works from her home studio in Mt. Penn. \nThis demonstration is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 but is limited to maximum number of 100 participants. Advanced registration is required. SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Watercolor Portrait Demonstration with Bernard Collins
DESCRIPTION:Experience the art of painting with the versatile and expressive medium of watercolor. This demonstration with longtime teaching artist Bernard Collins will focus on techniques in creating a watercolor portrait\, including an introduction to materials\, the proportion of the head\, and achieving a likeness. \nBernard’s paintings are a reflection of his desire to understand the human body and soul. As an African American artist he has had to balance his educational background\, which has been firmly grounded in European (traditional) techniques such as glazing\, under-painting\, etc.\, and his desire to capture the liveliness and innovation that is present in African American culture. The painted faces that have become important to his body of work represent the raw creative energy that pulses within all people of color. His models have always been his fellow artists\, writers\, poets\, rappers\, singers etc. \nThis demonstration is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 but is limited to maximum number of 100 participants. Advanced registration is required. SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Drawing Birds Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Carefully listening to and observing birds is an act of meditation. In this webinar we will take a few deep breaths before looking at a variety of species and noticing what is unique about each one. We will look inside of a bird to see what gives it its form and look at simplifying complex feather groups. By the end of this demo\, you will have a better understanding of how to approach drawing your first ever bird or improve upon the birds you’ve already been drawing. \nKatrina Rakowski was born in Hampton Bays\, NY. She received a certificate in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in 2005\, a BFA from the University of Pennsylvania in 2011\, and a masters in education from Tyler School of Art in 2013. Katrina has taught still life\, figure\, and animal drawing at various art centers\, schools\, and institutions since 2006. Her work is held in both private and corporate collections all over the USA. Most recently\, she illustrated two scientific journals of ornithology for the Academy of Natural Science’s Delaware Valley Ornithological Club\, Cassinia. Since she was a child\, Katrina has noticed and loved birds\, and this has become the special subject of her art. While mainly illustrating birds in a life-like manner\, she has also explored and encourages her students to explore the multitude of meanings and feelings that birds evoke\, and to translate those aspects into their art. \nThis demonstration is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 but is limited to maximum number of 100 participants. Advanced registration is required. The tour will be hosted through Zoom\, which can be accessed on desktop and laptop computers\, as well as mobile devices. We highly recommend downloading the Zoom app to your device in advance. SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Resilience and Creativity in Times of Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:We don’t know yet what life will look like after we emerge from our COVID-19 quarantine. Will it change the way we see or make art? This lecture reviews art and architecture that arose when earlier pandemics occurred. What can we learn by taking a look at a past that\, as now\, held times of fear\, illness\, suffering and loss? What insights are possible about human resilience and creativity? \nKathryn McFadden\, Ph. D.\, is an independent scholar. She teaches philosophy\, gender studies\, and art history in the Philadelphia area. Last year she presented a paper on the protean body in contemporary art at SECAC Conference in Chattanooga. A review of Berthe Morisot’s exhibition at the Barnes Foundation was published earlier this year. You will receive a URL to join the demonstration after you complete the registration process.
