SUMMARY:Queer Art: Past and Present: Contemporary Queer Artists of Color
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Found in Translation series funded by the PA Humanities and National Endowment for the Humanities\, Fleisher Art Memorial and William Way are proud to present Queer Art: Past and Present\, a series of lectures exploring Queer art histories and contemporary practices and aesthetics through the voices of five renowned art historians and artists. The lecture series will take place on Zoom and live Spanish interpretation will be provided.   \nFound in Translation is a free series of art history and critical theory workshops organized by Fleisher in partnership with several cultural institutions throughout Philadelphia. The series specifically focuses on centering BIPOC and Queer voices\, reflecting a more inclusive view of the communities we work with. Found in Translation\, aligned with Fleisher’s mission of making art more accessible through our education and community programs\, brings these valuable perspectives to a broader public.  \nContemporary artists of color contest the whiteness and colonial legacies of ‘queerness’ and do so on a global stage. In addition to such contestations\, queer of color art and visual culture render queer more capacious with the capacity to imagine otherwise. From the importance of genre such as portraiture to the critical valence of certain materialities\, Bissonauth asks: how might a queer of color gaze incite another way of seeing; how do such works of art help us see differently?   \nThis presentation does not adhere to a particular chronology; rather\, I approach the material thematically. Furthermore\, this presentation mostly draws on contemporary examples (1980s onwards) alongside some historical sources that aim to shed light on transnational perspectives on queer\, feminist\, and transgender artmaking and aesthetic theory.  \n  Dr. Natasha Bissonauth teaches Art History at York University in Toronto. Her research centers queer\, trans\, and feminist artists of color with expertise in South Asia and its diasporas. Publications include Sunil Gupta’s Sun City: An Exercise in Camping Orientalism (Art Journal\, 2019)\, The Future of Museological Display: Chitra Ganesh’s Speculative Encounters (book chapter in Museums\, Sexuality\, and Gender Activism\, 2020)\, and The Dissent of Play: Lotahs in the Museum (South Asia Journal\, 2020). Recent research interests expand upon indenture studies\, archival work\, and material culture. She is currently working on a book project that looks at how contemporary artists remake aesthetic categories through archival returns. In doing so with a transnational scope of what ‘South Asia’ as a category could be\, she ultimately pursues kinship across Black and Brown art histories.      \nAbout William Way  \nWilliam Way seeks to engage and support the diverse LGBTQIA+ communities in the greater Philadelphia area through arts & culture\, empowerment\, and community connections. They want all LGBTQIA+ people to feel safe\, connected\, and empowered\, striving to be a community center whose staff\, management\, and board reflect the vibrant and richly diverse communities they serve. In these challenging times\, the William Way LGBT Community Center\, and what it represents\, has evolved to meet the needs of the diverse people it serves 365 days a year. SUMMARY:Queer Art: Past and Present: Representing the Nation to Itself: Queer American Art from late 19th century to Stonewall
The series specifically focuses on centering BIPOC and Queer voices\, reflecting a more inclusive view of the communities we work with. Found in Translation\, aligned with Fleisher’s mission of making art more accessible through our education and community programs\, brings these valuable perspectives to a broader public.  \nThis heavily illustrated talk will demonstrate that the history of American art and the history of sexuality traveled a parallel course for over a century. Beginning with the work of Harriet Hosmer through such defining figures as Thomas Eakins\, Charles Demuth\, Georgia O’Keeffe\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Jasper Johns\, Agnes Martin\, and Andy Warhol\, Jonathan Katz outlines how it was queer artists who represented the US to itself.   \nJonathan D. Katz is an art historian\, curator and queer activist. Currently an Associate Professor of Practice in the History of Art and Gender\, Sexuality\, and Women’s Studies at the University of Pennsylvania\, Katz is a pioneering figure in the development of a queer art history\, and author of a number of books and articles.  As a scholar of modern and contemporary art\, Katz is responsible for many of the first queer studies of such defining artists as Georgia O’Keeffe\, Jasper Johns\, Leon Polk Smith\, Ellsworth Kelly\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Richard Hamilton\, Yayoi Kusama\, Cy Twombly\, Agnes Martin\, Robert Indiana\, and a number of others. Katz is now completing two new books\, Hiding in Plain Sight: On the Queerness of Contemporary Art and The Silent Camp: Jasper Johns\, Robert Rauschenberg and the Cold War. He is also editor of the forthcoming Routledge Companion to Queer Art History.   \nAbout William Way  \nWilliam Way seeks to engage and support the diverse LGBTQIA+ communities in the greater Philadelphia area through arts & culture\, empowerment\, and community connections. SUMMARY:Diálogo 365: New Rhizomes Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Curated by: Gerard Silva & Andreina Castillo\, Diálogo 365 Founder\nOpening Reception: Friday\, August 12\, 6PM\nArtist Talk: Saturday\, August 27\, 4PM\n\n\n\n\nInspired by the 360 Cultural Lab mission and taking stock of the massive exodus from Venezuela in the last decade\, Diálogo 365: New Rhizomes takes the concept of placemaking as a departure point. We are asking artists to unpack the interpretations and possibilities of placemaking in our current state of uncertainty. In what ways do we strengthen or sabotage our sense of place? How are we rethinking what it means to connect to one another? How do we fortify our stems to build more equity as inbetweeners? Diálogo 365: New Rhizomes seeks a variety of visual perspectives from emerging and established artists of Latin American and Caribbean heritage. \n  \n360 Culture Lab has been supported by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage.\n \nMasks are currently required for all Fleisher visitors when on the premises.

SUMMARY:HANDMADE x El Mercado Cultural
DESCRIPTION:Get your holiday shopping done early!  \nFleisher proudly presents HANDMADE\, our annual craft market inviting Philadelphia’s artists and makers to showcase and sell their work in our historic sanctuary. We welcome Cassie Renee Peña\, who will curate our list of 20+ vendors who will be dishing out their wares to those looking for unique and affordable holiday gifts. This year\, HANDMADE will be presented in collaboration with El Mercado Cultural\, a Fleisher initiative focused on sharing creative and marketing resources with Latinx entrepreneurs. \nShoppers can expect high quality handmade goods from a variety of mediums that include fabric\, clay\, glass\, wood\, paper\, and much more.  The show will highlight Fleisher teaching artists and students as well as a selection of local artists and craftsmen.  Stop by our lobby to enjoy coffee from Persimmon Coffee (@persimmoncoffee)! \nAbout the curator \nCassie Renee Peña’s work attempts to reconcile the barbarism of western civilization and its continuous attempt to ‘other’ cultures outside of a Judeo-Christian context through the exploration of iconography\, mythology\, antiquities\, Tinder\, and Jester’s Privilege. While existing in the historical context of American empire decline and the internet\, her work also operates as self-mocking diary entries regarding the complications and navigation of human existence. Utilizing non-European clay coil-building techniques to create ancient Greek forms in porcelain\, a clay body generally associated with wealth\, Peña’s work nods to the history of craft while maintaining a lack of self-serious refinement. She resides in Philadelphia\, PA. \nThis year’s vendors include: \nArtesinA: @artesinagroup \n@artesania_gustemalteca_de_ana \nGoods and Bads: @goodsandbadsstudio \nCynthia Bayer \nHerbal Jawn Apothecary: @herbaljawn \nMason Carter + Olivia Duffy: @masonfromblendini + @PortOlivia \nBy Ren: @by.ren \nUh-Huh Design Studio: @shopuhhuh \nFleisher Art Memorial Open Studio Potters \nFleisher Art Memorial Staff \nFleisher Art Memorial Teen Lounge \nLili Daliessio Designs: @lilidaliessiodesigns \nSignature Books & Accessories: @signature_books \nPejo Goshni by Maria Hernandez: @pejo_goshni \nMoonlight Arte: @moonlight_arte \nGuille \nPatrick Griffin @griffin.pottery \nCharlotte Holt Art: @charlotteholt.art \nFrances Iadarola: @francesiadarola \nV Israel Ceramics: @v_israel_ceramics \nEverywwwhere: @everywwwhere \nRachel Kedinger + Victoria Ahmadizadeh Melendez: @rkedinger + @internet___angel \nKatrina Kopeloff Illustration: @kopeloff \nWho Press’d Press: @whopressdpress \nBox Turtle Press @boxturtlepress \nKaren Kriegel: @karenkriegel \nTombino: @tombinoshop \nLuis: @mochibaybags \nReyna Navarro: @artesani_mundo_de_queen \nCharnelle Nixon: @gift.well001 \nPatricia Patzi Art: @patzi.patzi \nLeslie Richards: @leslie.richards.art \nLost Mirage: @lost.mirage \nMadeline Mae Studios: @madelinemae_studios \nMagic Needles Mari: @magic_needles_mari \nMagico Artemez: @magicoartemez \nMexico Art: @mxheartde \nOur Hope: @_ourhope \nMary Schneider: @marydotart \nJillian Schley: @jillianschley \nGabrielle Silverlight: @gabriellesilverlight \nHolly Simple: @holly_simple \nSmall Print Studio: @_jackie.small \nSpuul: @spuul215 \nJuan Tang Hon: @juandtang \nTenangos Philly: @tenangosphilly \nTrina’s Jabones \nLinda Abd Ulbaki: @creacioneslindausa \nVenbisustore: @venbisustore \nJulieta Zavala: @julietazavala \nJane Zweibel Studio: @janiejanez \n
