SUMMARY:Fighting the Nazis: The Eternal Film Villain | Lifeboat
DESCRIPTION:As World War II raged across Europe\, expatriate members from the continent’s film community made their way to Hollywood\, creating a number of timeless and impassioned films inveighing against the fascist menace. Although Germany’s Nazi Party would be stripped of power at the war’s end in 1945\, Nazis have never left cinema screens\, staking their claim as eternal film heavies. This class surveys their stubborn onscreen presence across more than 70 years\, discussing the shifting context through the decades and their continued relevance as celluloid villains. Each class begins with an opening presentation about the films’ history and its creators as well as a open discussion post-screening on the ideas suggested by the work. \nThis week\, we’ll be screening LIFEBOAT (1944\, directed by Alfred Hitchcock\, 97 minutes\, U.S.). \nOther films to be screened:\nJOJO RABBIT (2019\, directed by Taika Waitiki\, 108 minutes\, New Zealand/U.S.) on 4/17/2025 | REGISTER\nARMY OF SHADOWS (1969\, directed by Jean-Pierre Melville\, 145 minutes\, France) on 4/14/2025 | REGISTER\nESCAPE (1940\, directed by Mervyn Le Roy\, 98 minutes\, U.S.) on 4/21/2025 | REGISTER\nBLACK BOOK (2008\, directed by Paul Verhoeven\, 146 minutes\, Netherlands) on 4/28/2025 | REGISTER

SUMMARY:Discovering Hidden Print Collections: Brandywine Workshop and Archives Tour
DESCRIPTION:Come discover treasures in Philadelphia’s special collections! You will get special behind-the-scenes tours of Philadelphia institutions\, where you will see fine art prints and printed ephemera\, not normally available to the public. Together we will look at prints from the past\, learn how they were made\, and learn how they are relevant to us today. The history of printmaking will come to life as we discover up close how artists used print processes like lithography\, screen printing\, and etching to make art and communicate ideas. For the past 40 years\, Brandywine Workshop has been a leader in the development of offset lithography as a fine art. The workshop remains committed to the creation\, documentation and preservation of a legacy of culturally diverse American art and insuring the participation of multi-ethnic artists and audiences in the field of fine art printmaking and related media technologies. \nThis tour will meet at Brandywine Workshop and Archives at 728 South Broad Street Philadelphia\, PA 19146. \n• Tour does not include transportation.

SUMMARY:Queer Makers: Euphoria Portraits
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop we’ll be looking at how queer artists have used portraiture as a vehicle for exploration and expression. Following this\, we’ll be making our own expressive portraits\, with paint and collage materials provided by Fleisher. \n  \nQueer Makers is a space for queer and ally artists to come together\, learn\, discuss\, and create! In this series of workshops\, join student teaching artist Kieran Becker for a fun presentation on artists– historical and contemporary– who have used art to express their queer identity or highlight queer issues\, followed by group discussion and responsive artmaking activity. Each session will focus on a new topic and new prompt for artmaking. \n  \nKieran Becker is an intern at Fleisher Art Memorial and a college student in his final semester studying art education at Temple University. This workshop serves the purpose of fulfilling his final student teaching requirements. As such\, students are signing up for a workshop that is experimental in nature\, but nonetheless held to the same standard as all of Fleisher’s programming. Students will also have the optional opportunity to submit their work or have it photographed for the Art of Student Teaching exhibition\, the senior thesis exhibition for Temple art education majors\, showing at Tyler School of Art and Architecture from April 23-27th.

SUMMARY:Fighting the Nazis: The Eternal Film Villain | Army of Shadows
\nThis week\, we’ll be screening ARMY OF SHADOWS (1969\, directed by Jean-Pierre Melville\, 145 minutes\, France). \nOther films to be screened:\nLIFEBOAT (1944\, directed by Alfred Hitchcock\, 97 minutes\, U.S.) on 3/31/2025 | REGISTER\nJOJO RABBIT (2019\, directed by Taika Waitiki\, 108 minutes\, New Zealand/U.S.) on 4/7/2025 | REGISTER\nESCAPE (1940\, directed by Mervyn Le Roy\, 98 minutes\, U.S.) on 4/21/2025 | REGISTER\nBLACK BOOK (2008\, directed by Paul Verhoeven\, 146 minutes\, Netherlands) on 4/28/2025 | REGISTER
