The workshop will also explore techniques for printing on fabric\, as well as toning your images to alter their final color. \nWhat you will learn:\n1. Brief history of cyanotype\n2. How to prepare paper with solution\n3. How to expose photograms and negatives in sunlight\n4. Demonstrations of printing on fabric and amber toning \nNote that this classroom is accessible by stairs only; please contact Fleisher for more information.

SUMMARY:Curatorial Tour "Crescendo: How Art Makes Movements (1981–1999)" with Joyce Chung
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special tour of Crescendo: How Art Makes Movements (1981–1999) with curator Joyce Chung. \nCrescendo: How Art Makes Movements (1981–1999) is a historical survey of multidisciplinary art projects that intersected with Asian American social movements between 1981 and 1999. Largely inspired by jazz and improvised music\, art forms central to the Black Arts Movement\, the artists featured in this exhibition intended to redefine the presence of Asian Americans and broaden their artistic horizons beyond the politics of representation. Crescendo\, the exhibition’s title\, is a metaphor to capture the growing sociopolitical activism during this time\, which coincided with an artistic and cultural renaissance within the Asian American community\, as reflected in major achievements in music\, poetry\, dance\, theater\, and opera through collaborative explorations. \nJoyce Chung is the Curator at Asian Arts Initiative in Philadelphia\, where she oversees the exhibition and performance program. Her curatorial projects focus on the complexity of identity and representation through the lens of the politics of place. Chung is also interested in artistic exploration of struggles and hardships that are often overlooked\, such as those of ethnic and gender minorities\, women\, and immigrants. She previously worked at a number of museums and galleries both in Korea and the USA\, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art\, Korea\, Hyundai Card\, Kukje Gallery\, as well as for the Gwangju Biennale and Performa\, New York. Chung holds an MA in the Humanities with a concentration in Art History from the University of Chicago and a BA in Art History from Wesleyan University. \nThis tour will meet at Asian Arts Initiative located at 1219 Vine Street Philadelphia\, PA 19107. \nThis tour does not include transportation. Asian Arts Initiative does not have dedicated parking. Street parking is available. \nAsian Arts Initiative is designed as a mobility accessible facility\, with access to all public floors and spaces\, and seating accommodations for programmed events. Both non-gendered and individually isolating restrooms are available on each floor\, all equipped with changing stations. If contacted in advance\, we will make every attempt to fulfill requests for reasonable accommodations such as access to assistive technology devices and materials in alternative formats. For more information on site accessibility\, please contact info@asianartsinitiative.org.

SUMMARY:Four Filmic Character Sketches: Hell of a Heartache
DESCRIPTION:The medium of film is particularly well-suited for examining intricacies of the human experience. In this class we’ll screen four modern character studies and consider what their closely-observed details reveal about the universal truths of our existence.  With four films from three countries\, we’ll discuss how inner conflict is visualized to drive narrative and inject deeper meaning into action as well as presenting an overview of the careers of the artists involved.  Post-screening discussion about the characters portrayed will not be considered gossip. \nThis week\, we’ll be screening HELL OF A HEARTACHE (2020\, directed by Ron Burson\, U.S.). \nOther films to be screened:\nGLASSES (2007\, Naoko Ogigami\, Japan) on 6/23/2025 | REGISTER\nTHE MAID (2009\, directed by Sebastián Silva\, Chile) on 6/30/2025 | REGISTER\nPRIVATE LIFE (2018\, directed by Tamara Jenkins\, U.S.) on 7/7/2025 | REGISTER

SUMMARY:Darkroom Alchemy: Lith Printing
DESCRIPTION:Want to create one-of-a-kind and (mostly) unpredictable darkroom prints with aesthetics anywhere from haunted forgotten media to sketched in charcoal to etched in stone? Tired printing of endless test strips in the darkroom? Dive right in with the magical process of lith printing in this workshop! With the use of an alternate darkroom developer and shockingly old paper\, lith printing creates darkroom prints that can look unlike anything else. Some things students can expect from prints are any combination of: intense contrast\, visible grain\, unexpected colors\, dark or light speckling\, funky vignetting\, stunning highlight tonality\, spooky shadow delineation\, and so much more. \nThis workshop will give students the tools and knowledge to make entirely unique prints! Students will also get one-on-one guidance to work towards the aesthetic vision and story you might have in mind for your images. For students unfamiliar with darkroom printing\, there will be a quick refresh on the basics of printing with an enlarger\, and feel free to bring digital negatives for contact printing to streamline the process further. This technique is experimental and unpredictable–be ready for unexpected outcomes\, happy accidents you can’t replicate\, and the alchemy of the lith developer to decide your fate! \nWhat you will learn:\n1. Technical overview of the alternative darkroom print developing technique–lith bromide printing–and the range of its aesthetic results\n2. Basic refresher of how to print images in the darkrooom\n3. How to manipulate contrast and and control tonality in lith printing\n4. Experimenting with negative and paper selections to dramatically impact lith printing results\n5. Fun and (totally safe) chaos in the darkroom!”

SUMMARY:Deadline to Apply: Teen Lounge Request for Proposals

Past workshop topics have included sewing plush monsters\, rug tufting\, Nerikomi ceramics\, character design\, figure drawing\, and more! \nWorkshops meet once a week for four weeks at Fleisher Art Memorial\, on either Tuesdays or Wednesdays from 4:00-6:00pm. Experimental proposals are encouraged\, and teaching artists have any studios/facilities at Fleisher at their disposal including printmaking\, darkroom and ceramics. Participating teens will evaluate and select your proposals through our RFP process. \nAfter submitting a proposal\, 15 artists will be invited to attend a mandatory Proposal Fair on Thursday\, July 17 from 4 to 5 PM. to meet Teen Lounge students and share their workshop idea (compensated w/ $25 gift card).
