DESCRIPTION:El Día de los Muertos\n\n1 de noviembre de 2025\nFecha alternativa por lluvia: 2 de noviembre de 2025\nDe 2 a 9PM\n\nDay of the Dead\nNovember 1\, 2025\nRain date: November 2\, 2025\n2-9PM\n\nThe thirteenth Day of the Dead in Philadelphia is dedicated to  “México Lindo y Querido” which translates to “My Beautiful and  Beloved Mexico”. This patriotic phrase is from a famous song by  Mexican composer Chucho Monge and encompasses our sense of  pride in our November 1st celebrations. It also represents the theme  of La Ofrenda\, the traditional altar erected to honor the dead\, which  celebrates culture and tradition\, and as the song’s lyrics imply\, the  volcanoes\, the fields\, and the flowers of Mexico.\n\nMaria Hernandez\, the artist invited to bring her vision to La Ofrenda\, built in the Fleisher Art Memorial Sanctuary\, intends to honor her  homeland\, her roots\, and the beloved departed through her artistic  vision. Her focus is inspired by her humble and beloved birthplace\,  San Juan Amanalco de Becerra\, a place that still holds a beautiful  indigenous community in which craftsmanship is treasured. Known as  N’dabi\, “the place where water abounds”\, in the Otomí native  language. Amanalco is an enchanted municipality in the state of  México due to the spectacular natural surroundings\, the cultural and  prehistoric legacy of the region and the prevalent Otomí residents  who continue to influence the way of living\, promoting the use of  one’s own hands to create. \nThis Fleisher’s Day of the Dead celebrations has particular significance because in the Aztec world\, the number thirteen is associated with the repeating cycles of change and the balance and harmony of opposites: the east with the west\, the north with the south\, Philadelphia with Amanalco\, life with death\, and night and day.  The number 13 is sacred and it emits positive energy that connects us to our ancestors and their beliefs and culture. That’s why our celebrations begin each year during the day and end at night\, with our bodies in Philadelphia and our hearts beating to the rhythm of the homes we left behind. \nOn Friday\, October 31\, we invite the entire community to join us and help with the final preparations for La Ofrenda from 2-9 PM and to enjoy family workshops from 5-8 PM. \nOn November 5\, the film club\, El Conejo en el Faro\, will hold a special presentation of the Luis Buñuel film\, Ensayo de un Crimen (México\, 1955) with a conversation afterwards.

SUMMARY:Weaving in the New Year at Pendle Hill (five-day workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Step into a mindful and creative experience learning how to weave in the New-Year with this multi day retreat experience at Pendle Hill led by Fleisher instructor Anna Bockrath. Participants will meet in the Pendle Hill studio to receive hands-on instruction on both large and small frame looms\, learning weaving techniques woven with mindfulness—breath work\, intention setting\, and reflective pauses that enrich both mind and hand. After morning instruction\, participants are welcome to use the studio\, until 8pm each day giving you ample time to weave\, stroll the serene grounds\, journal\, or simply let your experience settle in the quiet beauty of Pendle Hill. The workshop includes lunch each day\, and learning materials are provided. DESCRIPTION:This workshop will focus on creating life-like human eyes in clay. Students will gain an understanding of proportions\, anatomy\, and modeling techniques based on observation/research. The workshop will offer demonstrations to illustrate sculpture methodology\, as well as individual critiques to assist students in meeting their personal goals. \nFiring Schedule: Sculpture students are welcome to fire finished work in our Ceramics Studio. Finished work may not be on an armature and must be bone dry before firing. Therefore\, sculpture students are encouraged to bring finished work home at the end of the term and bring it back to campus the following term for firing. DESCRIPTION:In this workshop we’ll be looking the use of art and visuals to further queer activism throughout the history of the LGBTQ rights movement. Then\, students will have the opportunity to spread their own message with supplies to make zines and posters. \nQueer Makers is a space for queer and ally artists to come together\, learn\, discuss\, and create! In this series of workshops\, join student teaching artist Kieran Becker for a fun presentation on artists– historical and contemporary– who have used art to express their queer identity or highlight queer issues\, followed by group discussion and responsive artmaking activity.
