SUMMARY:PAAFF Community Series
DESCRIPTION:On November 13 and 15 Fleisher will host the Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival’s community program. As part of the festival’s dedication to community\, the program will feature free film screening and theater performances in Fleisher’s historic Sanctuary space. All programs are free and open to the public\, but the festival does ask that you RSVP in advance. Follow the links below for more information on the screenings and performances and to RSVP for a spot. \n5:00 p.m.-6:15 p.m. \nGetting Lao’d: The Rise of Modern Lao Music and Films\nRSVP\n40 minutes | Documentary | Lao People’s Democratic Republic | English\, Lao\nDirected by Steve Arounsack \nAfter 25 years of silence\, the private Lao music and film industries are reawakening. Filmed over 10 years\, Getting Lao’d follows a new generation of young pioneers as they reimagine Lao media in a communist country. The film features many of the country’s most prominent musicians and filmmakers\, and is perhaps the most comprehensive examination of the media landscape in Laos. \nMany neighboring countries in Southeast Asia have seen their music and film industries remain vibrant. Media in Laos\, however\, remains shrouded in mystery due to its landlocked geography and restrictive political environment. This documentary provides an extremely rare look at a new generation that tipped the cultural fulcrum. It is a story about a small country with a big heart. \nScreened with short film Phetmixay Means Fighter.\nDir. Rita Phetmixay | 12 minuntes | USA\nLao American refugee Phoutone Phetmixay shares his experiences as an anti-communist rebel in Laos in this short documentary. Through trials and tribulations\, Phoutone is able to survive a series of challenging encounters before escaping to the United States to start a new life. \nDirector Rita Phetmixay expected in attendance for post-film Q&A. \n6:30 p.m.-7:45 p.m. \nJizolibido\nRSVP\n61 minutes | Documentary | Japan | Japanese\nDirected by Yoshiaki Kasatani \nAtelier Yamanami is a care facility for the disabled located in Koka\, Shiga Prefecture in Japan. Currently\, 88 users are registered as artists\, all of whom possess a unique way of expressing themselves through various media and whose works are highly valued abroad. This documentary explores these artists’ “relationship between their mental states and their art.” \nScreened with short film Morgan.\nDir. Eiko Fan\, Aidan Un | 6 mins | USA \nMorgan has very limited mobility. He can swing his feet a little\, and he moves his middle finger to paint large paintings. He cannot speak but his eyes can direct the computer to tell what he wants to say a little. His paintings speak of his unique ability and intention to express himself. \nDirectors Eiko Fan and Aidan Un expected in attendance for post-film Q&A. \n8:10 p.m.-9:45 p.m. \nTheater performance: Voided by Pratima Agrawal\nRSVP\n80 minutes | Live Performance\nWritten by Pratima Agrawal | Directed and Performed by Pratima Agrawal \nWhat is it like to be an unconventional Indian woman trying to exist in a marginalizing world? Voided is a solo performance inspired by Pratima’s own experiences and the true story of Kalpana Chawla (the first Indian female astronaut in space and one of the crew members who died in the 2003 Columbia accident). It is the exploration of culture\, status quo\, and representation that dares to color outside the lines. \nPratima is a local performing artist\, teaching artist\, and administrator. While she considers herself to be from Austin\, she moved to Philadelphia four years ago by way of Bethlehem for the city’s vibrant theatre and arts scene and is inspired by the progressive community voices within and outside of the arts. She finds purpose in working on projects that challenge her as an artist and push the boundaries of art and humanity. She also volunteers for the Philadelphia Ready for 100 clean energy campaign and is a Sixers fan. She would like to thank all her collaborators for their artistry and continued support. \nCo-presented by Philadelphia Asian Performing Artists.

In the late 1970s\, he pioneered the Contemporary Constructed Photographic Movement in Los Angeles\, developing a new visual vocabulary by constructing tableau photographs from sets\, sculptures\, models\, and paintings. The film portrays an artist deeply concerned and well informed about world events who uses imagery\, storytelling\, and narrative fiction to raise awareness about modern anxieties with an emphasis on the threat of nuclear weapons technology. Nagatani has also explored healing techniques and states of consciousness in which the material world is transcended. Despite the serious content of his subject matter\, his innovative images are compelling and entertaining. An engaging raconteur and teacher\, Nagatani talks in the film about his projects\, his unorthodox photographic techniques\, and his subtle weaving together of fiction and fact. Scott Nagatani’s hauntingly beautiful music score provides the film’s soundtrack. \nDirector Lynn Estomin expected in attendance for post-film Q&A. \n7:45 p.m.-9:15 p.m. \nAugust at Akiko’s\nRSVP\n75 mins | Drama | Hawaii | English\nDirected by Christopher Makoto Yogi \nAugust at Akiko’s is a mystical film that lives in the seams between dream\, reality\, and memory with a time signature all its own. Armed with just his suitcase and a sax\, cosmopolitan musician Alex Zhang Hungtai (Dirty Beaches\, Last Lizard) returns home to the Big Island of Hawai‘i after being away for nearly a decade. Amidst possessed sax solos and brooding strolls\, Alex stumbles upon a Buddhist bed & breakfast run by a woman named Akiko (Akiko Masuda). Hungtai’s wild sax and Akiko’s Buddhist bells form the base for a rich soundtrack surrounding the unexpected new friendship and wrapping around the audience like a sonic web.

SUMMARY:Faculty Fellowship Exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:After an intensive jurying process\, Fleisher teaching artists Henry Bermúdez and Bernard Collins were selected as the 2019 faculty fellows. Bermúdez is the recipient of the Dene M. Louchheim Faculty Fellowship\, which was created in memory of Dene Louchheim\, who served as chair of Fleisher from 1964 to 1980. Collins has been awarded The Fred and Naomi Hazell Faculty Fellowship\, established by artist\, musician\, poet and craftswoman Naomi Hazell to support the efforts specifically for painters working in oils. \nAn exhibition of both fellows’ work will be on view in Fleisher’s galleries December 6\, 2018\, through January 25\, 2019. An opening reception will be held Friday\, December 7\, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. \nHenry Bermúdez\nBermúdez’s paintings are steeped in mythical dream imagery\, an otherworldliness of carefully constructed swirling forms\, lush color\, and splashes of gold. His palette is rich and vibrant. Earthy jewel tones saturate the canvases\, and his use of gold-leaf marks his work with a bright warm light. His figures emerge from the rich complexity of their settings\, intertwining and flowing. His paintings exude a surrealistic atmosphere\, suggesting a mythology full of complex cultures lost in the wilds of the jungle or living in a primordial world. Vines and trees are sinuous tangles emerging from the background\, winding around themselves and figures. Horses\, serpents\, and mythical figures are gracefully powerful striations of muscle and sensuality. The artist’s paintings deftly explore the intersection of pre-Columbian and Christian\, melding the two cultures and creating a new language of images and meanings. \nBermúdez’s work has been placed in many prestigious public and private collections throughout Central and North America. Major museum collections include the museums of contemporary art in Caracas\, Maracaibo\, Merida and Maracay in Venezuela\, as well as others. He was selected to be the Venezuelan representative for the 1986 Venice Biennale and has been the subject of numerous articles. His work has been included in many exhibition catalogs including the X International Print and Drawing Exhibition of China\, as well as in books on the subject of Venezuelan art. \nBernard Collins\nCollins’ paintings are a reflection of his desire to understand the human body and soul. As an African American artist he had to balance his educational background\, which has been firmly grounded in European techniques\, and his desire to capture the liveliness and innovation that is present in African American culture. \nThe painted faces that have become important to his body of work represent the raw creative energy that pulses within all people of color. His models have always been fellow artists\, writers\, poets\, rappers\, or singers. Collins is currently working to expand this body of work to include very young and elderly subjects. Their life experiences will be reflected in the way he applies paints to their faces and bodies.

SUMMARY:Art of the Darkroom Print at Da Vinci Art Alliance
DESCRIPTION:Da Vinci Art Alliance – DVAA is proud to work in coordination with Fleisher Art Memorial to host “Art of the Darkroom Print\,” a group exhibition in DVAA’s Gallery 1 of photos by Rick Wright and 14 students in his Darkroom: Art of the Fine Print class at Fleisher. \n“We few\, we happy few\,” invite you to the Photo Resistance as the Da Vinci Art Alliance opens its “Art of the Darkroom Print” exhibit. Come marvel at “old world” film-based darkroom photography and see just how strikingly “the other half” prints. Analog photography is alive and thriving\, and you’ll experience some of the finest black & white photography being made in Philadelphia. The work comes courtesy of Wright’s class\, which has been running continuously at Fleisher for a decade. \nFourteen talented artists\, and their instructor\, will display the tactile beauty of their luscious\, hand-crafted\, hand-toned silver gelatin prints January 12-26. Please check the hours of the exhibition at davinciartalliance.org. Meet the artists at a reception on Wednesday\, January 23\, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. \nOur happy band of digital resistors all work in their own unique ways\, exploring film photography with an array of manual cameras: pinhole boxes\, twin-lens reflexes\, Dianas & Holgas\, tiny rangefinders\, 8” x 10” view cameras\, and tried and true 35mm SLRs. After the negatives are captured and developed\, the signature printing variations begin with: lith chemistry\, proof positives\, contact prints\, sepia and selenium toning\, fine art papers\, warm and cool papers\, ad infinitum. \nFleisher’s rollicking crew labors throughout the year (every Tuesday night): dodging & burning\, split filtering\, toning & bleaching\, and diving into the fun of it all. Film is a wonderful physical medium; come see for yourself in this rare opportunity. Pictured artwork courtesy of Scott McClellan. \nPARTICIPATING ARTISTS:\nAmanda Abramson\nKevin Brown\nPaula Brumbelow Burns\nDavid Cade\nCarlos Chan\nDominique Ellis\nEdoarda Frangi\nEddie Goldstein\nPeggi Pugh Gottlieb\nJeff Hofer\nEd Keer\nScott McClellan\nGene Renzi\nAndrew Tershakovec\nRick Wright

SUMMARY:Lost in the Woods\, a One-Act Opera
DESCRIPTION:With a libretto using nature writings from Henry David Thoreau’s journal\, spoken by commissioning ensemble\, the Akros Percussion Collective\, and Thoreau’s political writings\, sung by celebrated soprano Stacey Mastrian\, this opera celebrates the life and continued relevance of Henry David Thoreau\, composed in 2017\, the bicentennial of his birth. \nLost in the Woods\, (2013-2017)\, a one-act opera by Christopher Shultis\, composer\, using nature and political writings by Henry David Thoreau\, with video and stage design by Hee Sook Kim. Performed by Stacey Mastrian\, soprano and the Akros Percussion Collective. \nWith nature texts selected in Venice\, that most unnatural of places\, built on water where land was never meant to be\, and political texts selected during a Wurlitzer residency in the pristine natural setting of Taos\, NM\, a well-known source of inspiration for artists\, this opera plays with reversals of many types: “mother nature” spoken by male voices\, the vehement and radical opinions of Thoreau regarding slavery and the American government\, always and still led by male presidents\, sung by a woman. Nature and culture\, male and female\, self versus collective\, reversals abound as Thoreau’s political voice is sung by a woman and Thoreau’s observations of the natural world are recited by men. \nIncluding staging and video by past Wind Challenge artist Hee Sook Kim\, recorded in both New Mexico as well as some of the places where Thoreau lived and worked (Walden Pond\, Cape Cod\, the Maine woods)\, Lost in the Woods is a contemporary re-visioning of one of the 19th century’s most radical authors and naturalists\, intentionally combining the idealism and realism of Thoreau\, who wrote in a time of societal conflict that compares well\, and with similar negative and positive resonances\, with our own. \nThis event is free and no registration is required. Lost in the Woods is sponsored by Haverford College and the American Composers Alliance.

Translucent fabric or papers with interesting patterns\, like lace or mesh\, also work well with the process. All other supplies are included.

SUMMARY:Wind Challenge 2 Family Talk About
DESCRIPTION:Bring the whole family to learn about the work of Wind Challenge 2 artists Michelle Angela Ortiz\, Evan Dawson\, and Rebecca Gilbert. Join us for the exhibition’s Family Talk About with the artists Saturday\, April 20\, from 1:30-2:30 p.m. The Talk About is free and no registration is required\, just join us in the gallery! \nThe Wind Challenge Exhibition Series is made possible with thanks to generous support from the Wind Foundation and Fleisher members. \nSince its inception\, the series has introduced regional contemporary art from over 300 artists to a broad audience and has helped emerging artists advance their professional careers. Past Wind Challenge artists include photographer Robert Asman and sculptor Syd Carpenter\, both of whom were later awarded a Pew Fellowship in the Arts; beloved Fleisher teaching artist Charlotte Yudis; and brothers Billy and Stephen Dufala\, winners of the 2009 West Prize. In 2011\, a series of free-public programs led by the artists was introduced\, designed to enhance the viewing experience for youth and adults.
