SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Relief Printing from Wood
DESCRIPTION:The terms woodcut and wood engraving are commonly used to describe any image printed from wood\, but they’re not the same thing. Join visual artist and printmaker Rebecca Gilbert as she discusses the well-defined differences and similarities between the two processes. She will give a short talk about the history\, materials\, and techniques that go into making woodcuts and wood engravings. Then she will share some of her own work made using these two distinct processes. \nRebecca Gilbert is a Philadelphia-based artist whose work exemplifies a dedication to traditional printmaking processes\, while her innovation in executing these processes in combination with cut paper and assemblage push the boundaries of what a print can be. Her highly detailed work allows her to explore our perceptions of both space and beauty. It also recognizes her very human\, primal instincts.\nRebecca currently serves on the board of The Wood Engravers’ Network and is represented by The Print Center Gallery Store. She lives and works in South Philadelphia and teaches at The University of the Arts\, Maryland Institute College of Art\, and Fleisher Art Memorial. Her prints are in numerous public and private collections\, and have been exhibited regionally\, including at the Center for Emerging Visual Artists; nationally\, including at the International Print Center New York; and abroad\, including at the Palacio Huerto Ruano\, Lorca\, Spain. \nAmong Rebecca’s most recent awards are an Independence Foundation Fellowship and a Winterthur Artist/Maker Fellowship. These supported the research and creation of her most recent body of work\, Visions of Plenty: Observation\, Perception\, Illusion\, and Reverie. Inspired by historic moveable book structures and optical devices\, the work invites viewers to explore optics\, perception\, and the act of seeing by transforming intricately detailed prints into dimensional works on paper. \nYou can view more of Rebecca Gilbert’s work at rebeccaprint.com or follow her on instagram @rebecca_print. \nThis demonstration is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 but is limited to maximum number of 100 participants. Advanced registration is required. The tour will be hosted through Zoom\, which can be accessed on desktop and laptop computers\, as well as mobile devices. We highly recommend downloading the Zoom app to your device in advance. You will receive a URL to join the demonstration after you complete the registration process.

SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Painting in 3D
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a demonstration of a very unique technique the artist Claes Gabriel uses to make his colorful and bold sculptural paintings. We’ll learn his process in building a the structural frame\, stretching canvas on a varied angled frame\, and designing and painting the sculptural piece. We’ll also discuss Claes’ recent foray into mural painting and his mural “Boat People.” \nClaes Gabriel is a Philadelphia-based artist from Port-au-Prince\, Haiti. Gabriel immigrated to the States in 1989 and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting and Sculpture at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1999. His three-dimensional paintings ring with the spiritual energy of beings from folklore and his own imagined tales\, capturing a deified presence in each piece. Inspired by modernists such as Frank Stella and Sam Gilliam\, Gabriel’s work lives beyond the confines of a flat wall; he stretches and sews canvases taut over wooden armatures to construct masks and free-standing statues. After considering the natural shape of the piece\, Gabriel uses bright acrylics to pull out patterns\, eyes\, lips\, and personality that seem to rise to the surface of their own free will. Gabriel often says he knows a piece is finished when he can bow to it. SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Pintura Básica

SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Drawing the Figure
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a figure drawing demonstration with teaching artist Bernard Collins. We’ll discuss Bernard’s approach to drawing the figure\, explore anatomical proportions\, gesture\, and achieving a likeness. Bring a pencil and paper to follow along or just sit back and enjoy the demonstration. \nBernard Collins’ paintings are a reflection of his desire to understand the human body and soul. As an African American artist he has had to balance his educational background which has been firmly grounded in European (traditional) techniques such as glazing\, under-painting\, etc. and his desire to capture the liveliness and innovation that is present in African American culture. The painted faces that have become important to his body of work represent the raw creative energy that pulses within all people of color. His models have always been his fellow artists\, writers\, poets\, rappers\, singers etc. In the future he wants to expand this body of work to include some very young and elderly subjects.
