SUMMARY:Fighting the Nazis: The Eternal Film Villain | Black Book
DESCRIPTION:As World War II raged across Europe\, expatriate members from the continent’s film community made their way to Hollywood\, creating a number of timeless and impassioned films inveighing against the fascist menace. Although Germany’s Nazi Party would be stripped of power at the war’s end in 1945\, Nazis have never left cinema screens\, staking their claim as eternal film heavies. This class surveys their stubborn onscreen presence across more than 70 years\, discussing the shifting context through the decades and their continued relevance as celluloid villains. Each registration will come with a set of 4 graduated canisters\, with the classic merry mushroom design. We’ll spend the morning decorating your choice using a variety of glazes. Following the workshop\, we’ll fire your work and it will be ready for pick up at Fleisher in two weeks. \nThis is an all-ages program. Light snacks and art-making supplies will be provided. SUMMARY:An Early Evening Tribute to Samuel Fleisher and His World of Art and Yarn\, with Bill Brookover\, Marie Elcin and Beth Kephart
DESCRIPTION:Fleisher Art Memorial is a living memorial to the work of Samuel Fleisher\, who created a place for the arts to flourish in South Philadelphia. By acquiring the former St. Martin’s College for Indigent Boys in 1916\, Sam moved his successful Graphic Sketch Club to Catherine Street. The Graphic Sketch Club offered free art classes to the public\, adults as well as children\, in what Fleisher called “a playground for the soul.” He soon acquired the former Church of the Evangelist\, a protestant sanctuary whose beauty had been created to encourage a spiritual connection with its congregation. Fleisher opened the former church building as a sanctuary\, filled with art\, oriental carpets\, and fine furnishing reminiscent of Fleisher’s own home. The Sanctuary embodied Fleisher’s ideas of the healing power of art.\n\nBrookover will present a brief slide show presenting the chronology of the Fleisher buildings on Catherine Street\, putting Sam Fleisher’s ideas into the context of the building’s history. He will be joined by Beth Kephart\, author of Tomorrow Will Bring Sunday’s News: A Philadelphia Story\, a critically acclaimed new novel that features our city in the year 1918 and has at its heart the magnificent artful Fleisher Yarn factory that once stood at 26th and Reed. Kephart will speak to the impact that the Fleisher family’s generosity had during a critical year in the city’s history and will read passages from the novel that tell the tale of life inside the Fleisher factory. Kephart\, a National Book Award finalist and former Philadelphia Inquirer features writer\, is also the author of such Philadelphia-centric books as Flow: The Life and Times of Philadelphia’s Schuylkill River\, Love: A Philadelphia Affair\, and My Life in Paper: Adventures in Ephemera. More about Beth can be found at bethkephartbooks.com.\n\nMarie Elcin\, a fiber artist and art educator from Philadelphia\, will share her insights regarding textiles in the arts. She has a BFA in 2D Fine Art from Moore College of Art and Design and a Masters of Art Education from Tyler School of Art\, Temple University. She currently teaches printmaking and fiber arts at Fleisher Art Memorial and is an art teacher at a charter middle school in South Philadelphia.  Working in fibers keeps her connected to family and cultural traditions\, and teaching art in schools and communities allows her to explore art and ideas in social contexts.

DESCRIPTION:Fleisher offers day off camps on some Philadelphia School District closings. Join us for a full day of art-filled fun in our studios! Projects will change for each one day camp but explore art across different mediums and inspired by unique themes. Be ready to take home new artwork by the end of the day! \nDepending on your campers age\, they will spend the day with either our 5-7 year old or 8-11 year old cohort. If your camper would like to be in the same classroom as a friend or sibling\, please email cy@fleisher.org after registering. \nWant the fun to continue? Join our After Camp Club for games and activities in our Sanctuary space from 3:30 – 5:30 pm.

There are no prerequisites for this offering\, which is open to students at all levels. \nBeginners will learn all the basic skills including:\n1. How to operate your 35mm camera settings for greater control\n2. How to develop black-and-white film\, and how to print from negatives\n3. How to print and manipulate black-and-white images in the darkroom \nStudents with more experience will work alongside the instructor to finesse their prints with knowledge of printing techniques such as dodging and burning\, using contrast filters\, etc. \nNote that this classroom is accessible by stairs only; please contact Fleisher for more information.
