SUMMARY:Valientes Guerreras “Life Is Not Disposable!” / "¡La Vida No Es Desechable!”
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Bring Your Own Project initiative\, Fleisher partnered with Women Organized Against Rape and connected with Latina community members who had shared cultural and social roots as migrant women. Together as sisters\, they took on the challenge of confronting the adversities in their lives that provoked fear and blocked them from freely expressing their emotions. Through hands-on art-making\, a strong and supportive social fabric formed\, built on inclusion\, trust\, and safety. Inspired\, they formed their own artist collective Valientes Guerreras (Brave Warriors). Guided by artist facilitator Laura Deutch\, the group learned to tell their story through collage\, photography\, printmaking sewing\, cooking\, and more. Leaving a legacy emerged as a key theme\, and the idea to create a large curtain from recycled materials\, including 60\,000 soda tabs\, was born. The piece weaves symbols and pieces from compañeras (partners) no longer physically here\, but spiritually present. Each woman’s individual story is embedded in the piece\, bound by strength\, determination\, and creative will. \nThe result is an alternative vision to the idea of a wall that keeps people out. Instead\, Valientes Guerreras offers a porous curtain that transforms cosas tiradas (things thrown away) into something beautiful\, demanding that we see things differently and shining light on the potential of what’s possible when we all work together in our community. The curtain will be on view at Cherry Street Pier\, 121 N. Columbus Blvd.\, beginning May 3. Join us for a reception and to meet members of the collective from 5:00-8:00 p.m. \nBring Your Own Project (BYOP) is a creative place-keeping endeavor that puts Fleisher Art Memorial’s spaces\, resources\, and experience into the hands of community members as a means to tell and preserve their story\, identity\, and traditions during a time of rapid transformation in South Philadelphia. BYOP explores cultural equity and shared power\, as Fleisher seeks new strategies to collaborate with community partners through art and creativity. Together\, the goal is to honor\, preserve\, and promote cultural life in South Philadelphia by dismantling the barriers that prevent many children and adults from engaging with arts institutions. Bring Your Own Project has been supported by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. Additional support provided by the Samuel S. Fels Fund and Citizens for the Arts in Pennsylvania. SUMMARY:Mindfulness Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness is an invitation to pause and be present in your life\, just as it is right now. We know from a growing body of research that regular mindfulness practice helps to lower our stress levels\, decreases rumination\, and boosts working memory and focus. Individuals who regularly practice mindfulness report feeling more satisfied with life and their relationships and are less emotionally reactive. In fact\, studies show that we are actually happier when we’re living in the present moment. Let the worries of the day go and join us this Thursday\, May 16 to practice mindfulness at 6:00 p.m. in Fleisher’s beautiful Sanctuary space. \nThis event is free and no registration is required. \nDenise Kozikowski\, PhD is an experienced mindfulness leader and certified coach. She did her mindfulness training under the direction of Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli through the Center for Mindfulness\, UMassMed.

SUMMARY:Common Space Initiative: "Flower Drum Song" Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join Philadelphia Asian Performing Artists and the Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival for a free community screening of the classic 1961 movie-musical “Flower Drum Song.” As part of the PAPA Member Monday Series\, this event centers the collaborative community building of Asian American and Pacific Islander Performing artists\, but all who are interested in learning about and supporting this movement are welcome to attend. \nCommon Space Initiative is Fleisher’s newest neighborhood-based program designed to help community members find and keep a sense of place in a culturally diverse and rapidly changing South Philadelphia. In a time of increasing gentrification and tensions over the use of South Philadelphia’s limited public space\, Fleisher will create a place where inclusive\, community-driven projects are made and shared. All programs in this series will be developed by the community organizations or artist collectives that host them\, and are free and open to the public. \nBefore “Crazy Rich Asians” and before “Joy Luck Club\,” “Flower Drum Song” was truly the first Hollywood studio film to star an all Asian cast. This 1961 adaptation of the 1958 Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway musical about missed connections and intergenerational conflict helped boost the careers of an entire generation of Asian American actors into mainstream stardom. Academy Award winning actress Miyoshi Umeki stars as Chinese immigrant Mei Li\, a young woman who arrives in San Francisco’s Chinatown with the intention of marrying a rakish nightclub owner Sammy Fong (Jack Soo). Things soon become complicated when Sammy wants to marry showgirl Linda Low (Nancy Kwan). In an effort to get out of his arranged marriage\, Sammy tries to pawn her off to wealthy Master Wang (Benson Fong) as a fiancée for his son\, Wang Ta (James Shigeta). However\, as the elder generation begins taking an interest in the marital futures of their children it is unclear whether any of them will be able to marry for love. \nSchedule:\n7:05: short preview of the Philly Asian Histories Project\n7:15: introduction to “Flower Drum Song” by Fleisher Programs Director (and PAAFF Festival Director) Rob Buscher\n7:20: film starts \nAbout PAPA:\nWe are a collective of theatre artists who seek to enhance and strengthen the presence of Asian Americans in the Philadelphia theatre community. Our goal is to provide consistent\, focused training with workshops and mentorship for their members through partnerships with professional theaters and artists. As a result of sustaining and increasing the skill levels of this group\, we hope to empower and retain emerging Asian American theater artists in Philadelphia. As PAPA grows and strengthens\, we aim to encourage and create performance opportunities for PAPA members and also reflect the greater diversity of this city and its stories. \nAbout PAAFF:\nPhiladelphia Asian American Film & Filmmakers is a nonprofit organization founded in 2008 to celebrate and elevate the voices of the Asian American & Pacific Islander experience in cinema. For over a decade we have presented captivating year-round programs that engage and inspire Asian communities while building bridges between diverse communities throughout Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival\, traditionally held in November\, is our marquee event and prides itself as the largest film festival on the East Coast dedicated to AAPI content. The festival brings in audience members from around the country and AAPI filmmakers\, actors\, and leaders from around the world.

SUMMARY:DEAR ARLEEN: Celebrating ARTZ @ Fleisher
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate with us and learn more about a new partnership between ARTZ Philadelphia and Fleisher\, now entering its first full year of programs. Learn about how Fleisher and ARTZ are collaborating to enhance the quality of life of people living with dementia and those they love\, celebrate Arleen Weinstein and enjoy a performance by The Philadelphia Women’s Slavic Ensemble. \nWhy are we dedicating this event to Arleen? \nIn December 2014\, Fred and Arleen Weinstein attended their first ARTZ @ The Museum program. They were a wonderful couple – gregarious\, full of good humor and insights. Arleen had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease four years earlier\, but her lifelong love of art was evident from the outset. Fred and Arleen became ARTZ @ The Museum regulars and hardly missed a session. When Arleen moved into a care community\, ARTZ stay connected with her and Fred\, providing programming to the memory care floor where she had taken up residence. And so Arleen became the first ARTZ participant to transition from living at home to living in a long term care setting. She became the first participant to demonstrate that no matter how long her illness continued or where she lived\, Arleen remained clearly and without a doubt … Arleen. \nArleen’s combined role of art-lover\, insightful viewer\, and generous facilitator for others is honored in a new partnership program that we piloted last year at Fleisher. ARTZ @ Fleisher\, funded by the Arleen Weinstein Fund for Creative Aging\, is a celebration of all that Arleen brought to our community\, generously sponsored by her loving husband\, fellow art-lover\, and fellow ARTZ Philadelphia program participant.
