SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Sculpting in Clay Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Explore the art of sculpting in clay with our longtime teaching faculty member and prolific artist Darla Jackson. We’ll discuss the fundamentals of working with clay as a medium\, building a 3D form\, volume\, texture\, and the tools used in the process. Darla will demonstrate sculpting an organic form\, and if you have clay at home feel free to follow along! \nDarla Jackson has been teaching and exhibiting in Philadelphia since her graduation from Moore College of Art & Design in 2003. Darla has taught figure and animal sculpture classes throughout the area at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts\, the University of the Arts\, the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey\, and the Wallingford Community Arts Center. Darla’s sculpture has been exhibited in many local venues\, including as a Fleisher Wind Challenge artist\, at the Philadelphia Art Alliance\, Seraphin Gallery\, the Icebox at the Crane Building and the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, as well as various venues in California\, New Jersey\, Washington D.C. and Tremelo\, Belgium. SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Abstracting the Figure in Painting
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a painting demonstration of abstract figuration with teaching artist Martin Campos. We’ll discuss the process of abstracting the realism of the figure\, the composition and design elements involved\, as well as the gestural and expressive potentials of this genre. \nArcenio Martin Campos attended New Mexico State University for studio arts\, the University of New Mexico for art history\, and received a certificate of painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He began drawing on his own as a child\, and between schools acquired much of his fine art education from independent study and private instruction of the human figure.He began his teaching career conducting classes in cast drawing whilst still in New Mexico. He has given lectures on anatomy\, figure drawing\, and painting and has facilitated open figure drawing groups in both Albuquerque and Philadelphia. His work has received numerous awards and has been exhibited throughout the United States and abroad. In addition to Fleisher\, he currently teaches life drawing at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and figurative painting\, plein air\, and still life painting at the Wayne Art Center. \nThis demonstration is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 but is limited to maximum number of 100 participants. Advanced registration is required. SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Gallery Visit of New Works from Teotitlan de Valle Oaxaca
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a visit with longtime faculty member and renowned artist James Dupree. Last year James took a visual art residency in the small village of Teotilan de Valle in Oaxaca\, Mexico. He spent seven months living there and working on his new body of work inspired by the geography\, nature\, and people of Teotitlan. In this webinar\, James will share some of this new work and talk about the experiences that inspired it. He will be accompanied by musicians Richard Hill and Tom Kraines who will perform a musical piece inspired by James’ latest body of work. \nJames began exploring art at Fleisher as a child and has been a member of our faculty for many years. He’s known for his variety of paintings\, drawings\, prints\, and mixed media pieces. He is a recipient of the Living Legend Award from University of Pennsylvania\, and is among the first Black graduates of the university’s master of fine arts program. His paintings are housed in public and private collections around the world\, and numerous public works are displayed throughout the city. SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Painting Intuitively Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Discover teaching artist Doah Lee’s approach to painting intuitively. We’ll discuss materials\, acrylic and oil paint\, and several techniques and approaches for tapping into your intuition and working abstractly. Doah will demonstrate a non-objective abstraction approach as well as the abstraction idea approach. \nDoah is an interdisciplinary visual artist based in Philadelphia. She was born and raised in Seoul\, South Korea. She earned her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and her BFA with a concentration in painting and printmaking at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In her work\, she has explored how children speak\, listen\, see\, and draw\, and how images influence the way that a person’s identity is formed. She explores and exploits cultural symbols through repetition in a practice that mediates on cultural translation\, immigration\, otherness and femininity in focusing more specifically on issue of self-identification. The work has been featured in various exhibitions in Virginia\, Chicago\, Philadelphia\, Baltimore\, Los Angeles and Seoul. She has been a resident-artist at Cheltenham Center of the Art. She is a curator and member of an artist-run exhibition space\, FJORD gallery and currently teaches in the Art Foundation Program at Virginia Commonwealth University and Fleisher Art Memorial in Philadelphia. \nThis demonstration is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 but is limited to maximum number of 100 participants. Advanced registration is required. SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Chinese Brush Painting Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a demonstration and a conversation about the medium\, technique\, and philosophy of Chinese brush painting and calligraphy with Josephine Tsai. We will discuss the basic brushwork\, the inks\, brushes\, and Xuan paper\, and demonstrate the process and technique. \nJosephine grew up in Taiwan\, where she was exposed to the richness of Chinese culture. She immigrated to the United States in 1980 and lives in Media\, where she is an active participant in the Delaware Valley community. \nJosephine received her natural science degree at Fuzen Catholic University. In the last 30 years\, she has been an accomplished businessperson. However\, art-related works\, especially Chinese watercolor painting\, have always been her first love. She received private instruction from several well-known masters of Chinese art\, but she considers Mother Nature to be the greatest teacher. “My art work represents my love and respect for nature\,” she says. “Nature’s graceful character conveys a sentiment beyond its outward appearance. It is not an objective reflection through the sense of sights\, but rather a subjective expression of insight.” \nHer works often combine three distinct styles of Chinese painting\, the realistic style\, the spontaneous style and the ink splashed style\, allowing the positive aspects of each to create a lively impression. At the same time\, her artistic details invite the viewer to explore the spirit of the art. “My dancing brush and singing ink merge into my passion for the outside world and the joy of my inner being.” \nThis demonstration is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 but is limited to maximum number of 100 participants. Advanced registration is required. DESCRIPTION:During this webinar\, Darryl Smith will introduce various ways artists strived to achieve excellence in representing the human body through the study of anatomy. He will also discuss the benefits of learning anatomy and what that means for visual artists. Tune into this webinar if you are interested in learning more about the figure! \nBorn in Georgetown\, D.C. in 1992\, Darryl Babatunde Smith started making art as a way of interpreting foreign languages. He studied French\, German\, and Latin in high school and later began to learn ancient Greek\, Italian\, and Icelandic on his own. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts\, where he completed his BFA in painting\, and at the New York Academy of Art\, where he obtained his MFA in 2019 in drawing and anatomy. Through his knowledge of Latin and ancient Greek\, he immerses himself in antiquity. Darryl uses Greco-Roman symbols and traditional renaissance techniques such as metalpoint drawing and egg tempera painting to connect his personal narratives with classical literature. \nDarryl’s drawings have been featured on Fine Arts Connoisseur’s website and have been exhibited in New York City\, Reykjavík\, and Assisi. In the past two years he has been awarded residencies in Iceland\, Italy\, and Greece\, where he created work inspired by the landscape and ancient artifacts. Recently his metalpoint and egg tempera works were exhibited in Hillsdale\, Michigan\, in an exhibition of contemporary silverpoint drawings. \nThis demonstration is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 but is limited to maximum number of 100 participants. Advanced registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Discover the great printmaking treasures in the Free Library Print and Picture Collection. We will look at the robust collection of WPA posters and fine art prints that used screenprint and lithography. We’ll discuss their history\, the artists behind the posters\, and the printmaking techniques used to create them. Laura Stroffolino\, curator of the collection\, will help us put the WPA into the context of the library’s collections. \nBill Brookover is a printmaker and photographer whose work is based in his training in design and architecture. Born in West Texas\, he studied art and architecture at Rice University\, historic preservation at Columbia University\, and printmaking at Fleisher. His prints explore design\, color\, texture\, and geometric structure. His photographs explore architecture\, layered landscapes\, history and urban streetscapes. \nIn 2014\, Bill began leading tours of Hidden Print Collections for Fleisher printmaking students. He volunteers at the Print & Picture Collection of the Free Library of Philadelphia building a digital catalog of the Fine Art Print collection. In 2014 he served as independent curator for Eugene Feldman Offset Lithographs\, Print & Picture Hallway Gallery\, at the Parkway Central Library. DESCRIPTION:Ready to take your drawing to the next level? Discover the vibrancy of drawing in color with a variety of media in this demonstration with teaching artist Michelle Oosterbaan. We will discuss a variety of drawing media\, from color pencils to pastels\, drawing on color paper\, and how to render light and texture with color pencils. \nMichelle Oosterbaan is a visual artist based in Philadelphia. Recently she held several residencies across Northern Europe including the Cite des Arts International in Paris. Oosterbaan’s artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally at venues that include The Drawing Center New York\, The Weatherspoon Art Museum\, The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts\, The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis\, The Delaware Art Museum\, and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art\, Rijeka. She is a Great Rivers Biennial winner (2008 St. Louis\, MO) and published in FUKT\, A Drawing Journal (2009\, Berlin). She has also has received grants from Center for Emerging Arts (2014)\, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts (2004)\, and the Leeway Foundation (2001) among others. Oosterbaan was awarded residencies at The MacDowell Colony (2004) and Yaddo (2005\, 2003)\, as a John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur fellow\, in addition to invitations to VCCA\, (2009\, 2006). Her work investigates signs and symbols of time and spirit and the theatre of space and color. She earned a BFA from Washington University as a Fred Conway Scholar in painting/printmaking and an MFA from Indiana University and studied painting at SACI at Cleveland Institute of Art in Florence Italy. \nThis demonstration is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 but is limited to maximum number of 100 participants. Advanced registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Want to learn more about abstract watercolor? Join teaching artist Amy Miller as she demonstrates several introductory techniques. Using bold patterns from her vintage clothing collection as a source of inspiration\, Amy will walk you through her process for building layers and textures. \nAmy is a prolific artist and educator based in Philadelphia. Her evocative mixed-media works have been displayed in numerous solo and group exhibitions both regionally and nationally. Throughout her life she has delighted in a strong relationship with pictures. A direct vehicle for communication\, they spark ideas\, reveal information\, and burn memories. She received her BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 2001. Hratch will discuss techniques\, tools\, and the process of carving a wax model for jewelry design and how these creations come to life and are polished post-fabrication. \nGold and silversmith Hratch Babikian’s work is about the fascination and relationship of the natural world and humankind coexisting. Known for his high-precision textures and quality fabrication reminiscent of the hand-wrought era of jewelry and silverware\, using gold\, silver and different gem materials Babikian’s subjects range from oceanic urchins to collections of fossils\, microscopic flora and fauna. \nBabikian was born in Beirut\, Lebanon\, in 1961 and received his BFA in 1983 studying metals with Richard Reinhardt\, Sharon Church\, and Leon Luggasy at the Philadelphia College of Art at University of the Arts. There he received the acute attention to form follows function and decorative forming/forging associated with Reinhardt’s\, Church’s and Luggasy’s silverware and sculptural jewelry. His work can be found in myriad private and public collections both in the U.S. and abroad\, and has been represented and exhibited in numerous expos\, galleries\, and museums\, including Velvet da Vinci\, Silver Blue and Gold\, Yaw\, MetalBendars\, Sheila Nussbaum Gallery\, Ruby’s Fine Jewelry\, Aaron Faber Gallery\, The Swan\, The Works\, Sculpture to Wear\, the National Ornamental Metal Museum\, The Ward Museum\, and Deutsches Goldschmiedehaus. DESCRIPTION:Join Darryl Smith\, one of our newest teaching artists\, for a demonstration of the traditional silverpoint drawing technique. Darryl will discuss the history of silverpoint drawing\, also known as metalpoint drawing. He will also be drawing live while showing various types of mark-making\, drawing surfaces\, and properties of the metals that he uses in his work. If you’re interested in traditional materials or want to learn more about this Renaissance drawing technique\, this webinar is for you! \nBorn in Georgetown\, D.C. in 1992\, Darryl Babatunde Smith started making art as a way of interpreting foreign languages. He studied French\, German\, and Latin in high school and later began to learn ancient Greek\, Italian\, and Icelandic on his own. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts\, where he completed his BFA in painting\, and at the New York Academy of Art\, where he obtained his MFA in 2019 in drawing and anatomy. Through his knowledge of Latin and ancient Greek\, he immerses himself in antiquity. Darryl uses Greco-Roman symbols and traditional renaissance techniques such as metalpoint drawing and egg tempera painting to connect his personal narratives with classical literature. \nDarryl’s drawings have been featured on Fine Arts Connoisseur’s website and have been exhibited in New York City\, Reykjavík\, and Assisi. In the past two years he has been awarded residencies in Iceland\, Italy\, and Greece\, where he created work inspired by the landscape and ancient artifacts. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a studio visit with longtime faculty member and sculptor Christopher Smith. Christopher was born in Detroit in 1958 and currently lives and works in Philadelphia. The Detroit area\, known for its economic and social upheavals of the 1960s and 70s\, gave him the background to see how the memory of artistic form survives even the hard effects of time. From the sacred to the secular\, the human figure has always interested him. All of his pieces are unique creations\, which he models from life. “Every time the model poses\,” he says\, “I am amazed at the redolence of the human form.” \nChristopher always intended to be a sculptor. Upon completing a degree in sculpture at the University of Michigan\, he opened an independent studio. His theme has consistently been the figure\, solitary or in combination with other figures in compositional narratives. He sculpts mostly in clay and direct plaster\, and casts in uncommon materials. Since the mid-1980s his figures have been exhibited extensively in North America\, the UK\, and Sweden. \nThis visit is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 but is limited to maximum number of 100 participants. Advanced registration is required. DESCRIPTION:We don’t know yet what life will look like after we emerge from our COVID-19 quarantine. Will it change the way we see or make art? This lecture reviews art and architecture that arose when earlier pandemics occurred. What can we learn by taking a look at a past that\, as now\, held times of fear\, illness\, suffering and loss? What insights are possible about human resilience and creativity? \nKathryn McFadden\, Ph. D.\, is an independent scholar. She teaches philosophy\, gender studies\, and art history in the Philadelphia area. Last year she presented a paper on the protean body in contemporary art at SECAC Conference in Chattanooga. DESCRIPTION:Experience teaching artist Paul DuSold’s exciting approach to drawing a portrait. By working from a photograph\, Paul will walk us through the entire process of achieving a likeness. Each step of the process will be explained. Methods for achieving light and shadow and the illusions of texture such as skin and hair will also be discussed. Draw along with the demonstration or simply sit back and enjoy. \nPaul describes his work as “atmospheric representationalism\,” with still life\, portraiture\, and figures in landscape being his primary interests. SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: One of a Kind Screenprint Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will show the experimental qualities and immediacy of this one of a kind technique.  Have fun seeing the many different effects possible achieved with such simple\, freeing and direct techniques: a departure from traditional screenprint stencils. \nThe demonstration will show how to screenprint images that are drawn and painted directly on the screen using Caran D’Ache water-soluble crayons and soft water-soluble graphite to create layers of drawings and textures. The resulting prints in the demonstration will also employ the screenprinting monotype technique of painting with screenprinting inks directly on the screen. \nThis demonstration is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 but is limited to maximum number of 100 participants. Advanced registration is required. You will receive a URL to join the demonstration after you complete the registration process. \nAbout the instructor:\nSince she graduated in 1989 from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh\, PA\, her hometown\, Christine Blair has had a long artistic and teaching career in all the mediums of printmaking. Christine finally fulfilled her dream of having her own screenprinting studio when she set it up in the basement of her own house in South Philadelphia in 2015. \nChristine founded the Fleisher screenprint program in 1996. She also taught intermediate/advanced intaglio from 1993-2010 at Fleisher. \nBesides being a teaching artist at Fleisher since 1993\, Christine has taught all printmaking mediums and some drawing on the college level at PAFA\, Moore College of Art & Design\, Tyler School of Art of Temple University\, and pre-college at Carnegie Mellon University\, Tyler School of Art and University of the Arts. \nChristine received her M.F.A. in printmaking from Tyler School of Art of Temple University; her B.F.A. in printmaking and drawing from Carnegie Mellon University; and studied at Parsons Paris School of Design\, the American University\, and École des Beaux-Arts\, Paris. Before coming to Philadelphia for graduate school\, Christine worked in New York City as a printer’s assistant at Solo Press (currently named “Solo Impression”) and as a studio monitor at Bob Blackburn’s Printmaking Workshop. \nChristine has been an artist-in-residence at Fleisher\, a Wind Challenge artist\, and a Workspace Program Artist at Dieu Donné Papermill\, Inc.\, New York\, NY\, where she was one of four national artists selected to produce new projects in handmade paper in collaboration with master papermaker Paul Wong. \nNotably\, Christine’s work has been exhibited at George Billis Gallery and Dieu Donné Papermill\, New York\, NY\, Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum\, Santa Barbara\, and the San Diego Museum of Art\, CA. SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Drawing Birds Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Carefully listening to and observing birds is an act of meditation. In this webinar we will take a few deep breaths before looking at a variety of species and noticing what is unique about each one. We will look inside of a bird to see what gives it its form and look at simplifying complex feather groups. By the end of this demo\, you will have a better understanding of how to approach drawing your first ever bird or improve upon the birds you’ve already been drawing. \nKatrina Rakowski was born in Hampton Bays\, NY. She received a certificate in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in 2005\, a BFA from the University of Pennsylvania in 2011\, and a masters in education from Tyler School of Art in 2013. Katrina has taught still life\, figure\, and animal drawing at various art centers\, schools\, and institutions since 2006. Her work is held in both private and corporate collections all over the USA. Most recently\, she illustrated two scientific journals of ornithology for the Academy of Natural Science’s Delaware Valley Ornithological Club\, Cassinia. Since she was a child\, Katrina has noticed and loved birds\, and this has become the special subject of her art. While mainly illustrating birds in a life-like manner\, she has also explored and encourages her students to explore the multitude of meanings and feelings that birds evoke\, and to translate those aspects into their art. \nThis demonstration is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 but is limited to maximum number of 100 participants. Advanced registration is required. SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Painting Abstractly Demonstration with Mostafa Darwish
DESCRIPTION:Step into the world of abstract painting. Teaching artist Mostafa Darwish will be performing a live painting demonstration from a series that he is currently working on. The demonstration will touch on fundamentals and concepts behind abstraction in art\, what abstraction could mean for each artist\, and ways of navigating and applying those concepts into one’s practice regardless of mediums. \nMostafa immigrated to the United States from Egypt and is currently based in Philadelphia. He graduated in 2016 from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with a bachelor’s degree and certificate of fine arts in painting. There he was distinguished with the Faculty Award for outstanding growth and community involvement\, the Charles Toppan Drawing Award\, and the August Cook Prize award for Figurative Drawing. Among other achievements\, He is a recent awardee of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant. Mostafa displayed with and curated multiple emerging artist and group exhibitions\, most recently We Got Used to New Us in Philadelphia\, being awarded an honorarium grant and featured in a publication by WHYY public media. Mostafa’s current work focuses on bringing his own experience of a different culture and exposure into a western environment\, contrasting both East and West together to draw attention to political\, cultural and societal dissidence. \nThis demonstration is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 but is limited to maximum number of 100 participants. Advanced registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a studio tour and conversation with teaching artist and board member Bill Brookover. Bill is a printmaker and photographer whose work is based in his training in design and architecture. Born in West Texas\, he studied art and architecture at Rice University\, historic preservation at Columbia University\, and printmaking at Fleisher. His prints explore design\, color\, texture\, and geometric structure. His photographs explore architecture\, layered landscapes\, history and urban streetscapes. \nIn 2014\, Bill began leading tours of Hidden Print Collections for Fleisher printmaking students. He volunteers at the Print & Picture Collection of the Free Library of Philadelphia building a digital catalog of the Fine Art Print collection. In 2014 he served as Independent Curator for Eugene Feldman Offset Lithographs\, Print & Picture Hallway Gallery\, at the Parkway Central Library.
