DESCRIPTION:Take a break from your winter hibernation and join teaching artist Diane Collins to sketch everyone’s favorite animal in motion. We will work from video references of polar bears as they move about their wild lives in Churchill\, Canada. Capturing a gesture rapidly is key to comprehending a new subject in proportion and body expression. \nDiane has worked as a professional artist since 1984. Diane has focused on fine art since 1992\, including 21 years of experience in figurative animal sculpture. Diane has taught animal drawing and sculpture with PAFA and other institutions since 2005. With a strong foundation in animal anatomy\, ecorche\, and animal behavior\, Diane provides students with the skills needed to effectively represent both the structure and spirit of the animals they study. Diane’s artwork is in private collections throughout the northeastern US\, California\, and abroad. \nThis event is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 but is limited to a maximum number of 100 participants. SUMMARY:Well City Challenge Pitch Competition
DESCRIPTION:Fleisher is thrilled to share that we have been selected as a finalist in the Well City Challenge Pitch Competition. This social impact challenge addresses Philadelphia’s millennial health and mental well-being challenges. Fleisher’s team will be presenting its pitch live online on March 2\, from 5:15-6:30 p.m. \nOf the 100 ideas submitted during an open call\, 15 community solutions were chosen to participate in incubator workshops and a pitch competition. Fleisher’s pitch\, a collaboration with our friends at Juntos\, is called Mind Your Art. Our idea leverages hands-on art-making to help build connections\, reduce isolation\, and improve overall well-being for Latinx millennials and their families. We will engage our mobile art studio\, ColorWheels\, to bring socially distanced art activities led by Spanish-speaking teaching artists to parks throughout Philadelphia. \nVirtual pitch competitions are produced by the Economic League and will take place over three days. Each day will center around one of the three focus areas: community and social connection\, food and nutrition\, and mind and body. During each pitch competition\, a panel of judges will select a winner to be awarded $10\,000. The audience will select the People’s Choice Award winner\, which comes with a prize of $7\,500. All winners will move on to an accelerator to further develop their idea. \nWe hope you will participate in the community and social connection pitch competition on March 2 at 5:15 p.m. and vote for our idea to become a reality. SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Portrait Painting
DESCRIPTION:If you haven’t taken Santiago Galeas’ very popular classes while he was one of our teaching artists\, this is your chance to experience his wonderful teaching style. Santiago will demonstrate and explain how to add a second\, more detailed layer to a loosely painted portrait. Discussion topics will also include painting a subject with indirect light\, composing a portrait painting\, recognizing facial structure\, and mixing. \nSantiago Galeas is an emerging artist currently working in New York. Born and raised in Silver Spring\, MD\, Galeas moved to Philadelphia to seek an education at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts\, and then remained to then pursue a career as a figurative painter. Galeas has exhibited in numerous group and solo shows\, including Art Basel Miami 2016\, and has upcoming exhibitions in Denver and a solo in Philadelphia’s A Seed on Diamond Gallery. Aside from exhibiting\, publications have recently been showcasing his work including The Huffington Post\, the cover of Poets and Artists Magazine\, and several local newspaper sources. He has also recently completed a month-long residency with 360 Xochi Quetzal\, residing and working in Chapala\, Jalisco\, Mexico. \nSpecializing in figurative oil paintings\, he has a diverse range of subjects that address varying portraiture concepts. He has utilized his atelier style training and relied heavily on anatomy and structure\, though reinterpreted in a personal style. With strong influences from both traditional Alla Prima portrait painters and the Abstract Expressionist era\, this distorted imagery often results in a covenant between representation and abstraction. Galeas’ paintings serve as a link between subject and viewer: an encounter that is often confrontational and often face to face. \nThis event is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 but is limited to a maximum number of 100 participants. SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Experimental Photography
DESCRIPTION:Fleisher teaching artist Ahmed Salvador has been collaborating with artist Scott McMahon on a fascinating photography project for over a decade. The artists live in different states and mostly collaborate through the good old-fashioned postal service. They send each other pieces of film and photographic paper\, exposing them in some fashion over time and distance. The work also involves the destruction of the film and paper as an elegy for the fading art of traditional wet process photography. Destruction specifically by burning or puncturing the film or paper. Join us in conversation with these two accomplished photographers as we talk about their work\, the joys and challenges of collaborating\, and the state of analog photography today. \nAhmed Salvador received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills\, MI\, and his BFA from The University of the Arts. He is currently an exhibitions coordinator at the Philadelphia International Airport’s Art and Exhibitions Program and a photography instructor at Fleisher Art Memorial. Ahmed has shown his work in various solo and collaborative shows\, namely at the Halide Project\, Bridgette Mayer Gallery\, the Philadelphia Art Alliance\, Space 1026\, and the Sol Mednick Gallery in Philadelphia\, at Columbia College’s Hardwick Gallery in Columbia\, MO\, and at the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe. \nScott McMahon grew up in Connecticut and now resides in Columbia Missouri where he is an Associate Professor of Art at Columbia College. In this studio visit\, she will discuss her approach to incorporating calligraphy into her two-dimensional works\, share some new sketches and works in progress\, as well as demonstrate a few of her calligraphy tools and techniques\, in her temporary at-home studio space in southeastern Vermont. \nCandace completed both her BFA and MFA in Philadelphia\, at the Tyler School of Art and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts\, respectively. Her work was featured in the 2019-20 Fleisher Art Memorial Wind Challenge series\, and the artist also exhibited two other solo shows in 2020; Deep Green Query\, at Amos Eno Gallery in Brooklyn\, NY\, and Arts & Letters\, at the Putney Public Library. This year she is slated to sail on the 2021 Arctic Circle Residency\, off of Svalbard\, Norway. DESCRIPTION:Cezanne\, Piero della Francesca\, Degas… Discover the hidden rules and variables found within some of the world’s most famous paintings. We don’t usually notice\, but everything in a painting is on purpose. Painting greats\, like Picasso\, Balthus\, and many more all strived for dynamic ordered compositions to lead the viewer’s eye through the works. We will look for visual patterns\, similar shapes\, and overall pictorial ideas that make a painting work and stand apart from the rest. \nEkaterina Vanovskaya was born in St. Petersburg\, Russia. She received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2009 and an MFA from Indiana University\, Bloomington in 2015. A question and answer period will follow Kathryn’s presentation. \nKathryn Kelly is a jewelry designer from Pennsylvania whose extensive experience in the fields of architecture and woodworking informs her designs\, both aesthetically and technically. The daughter of an architect\, woodworker\, and ceramicist\, she incorporates her own experience in each of these crafts into her jewelry designs which are formally influenced by architectural details as well as methods from furniture making. Her jewelry is created in precious materials using a combination of rapid prototyping\, lathe turning\, casting\, and hand fabrication. Integral to her collections are the landscape of wood presentation bases housing the jewelry for display and giving each piece a second life when not being worn. She received a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Penn State University and her master’s degree in jewelry design from Central Saint Martins in London\, from which she graduated in 2019. DESCRIPTION:Learn how to screenprint on fabrics at home with Miriam Singer! Participants will be introduced to the steps in the screenprint process for printing on fabric using stencil-based screenprinting techniques. Topics covered will include mixing inks\, printing set up\, choosing the right screens\, creating stencils\, printing\, and instructions for clean up at home. \nMiriam Singer received her BA in sociology and studio art from Brandeis University in 2000\, and her MFA in painting with a concentration in printmaking from Massachusetts College of Art in 2003. Since moving to Philadelphia in 2004 she has exhibited at LG Tripp Gallery\, Friends of the Print and Picture Collection\, Art in the Airport\, James Oliver Gallery\, Gallery Siano\, Inliquid at Painted Bride\, Art in City Hall\, Topstitch\, Spector Gallery\, Gallery at Minnow\, and Padlock Gallery. Miriam uses a combination of printmaking and drawing media to create her unique works on paper and designs for public art projects. DESCRIPTION:During this interactive\, cross-disciplinary event\, learn about The Fabric Workshop and Museum’s current exhibition\, Samara Golden: Upstairs at Steve’s. Led by museum tour manager Katie Parry and University of Pennsylvania computer and information science doctoral student Ajay Patel\, this event will examine a defining characteristic of our current cultural moment: an overwhelming feeling of isolation coupled with a pervasive\, wired connectivity. Katie will give a short presentation about Samara Golden’s collaboration with FWM that coincided with the unsteadiness 2020 presented\, inviting us to wonder: how can we reflect on our days? How can we understand this moment with empathy? Can technology help us? The events of 2020 impacted the installation of Golden’s work and called for FWM staff to imagine new ways to connect to the public using technology as a tool and a companion. Ajay Patel will discuss the creative process of developing an interactive artificial intelligence platform in response to Golden’s work and its potential to generate empathy\, inspire action\, and conjure hope. \nAjay Patel is currently a Ph.D. student in machine learning at the University of Pennsylvania and the founder of Plasticity\, an AI startup. Recently\, Ajay helped build an AI project for Samara Golden’s exhibit at The Fabric Workshop and Museum. \nKatie Parry is a practicing artist with 20 years of experience in arts education. In her current role as museum tour manager at she imagines tours\, workshops\, and programs to engage all ages. She works in the community to build partnerships that become bridges—connecting contemporary art to all ages. Parry believes that art can serve as a mirror in which concepts such as identity\, loss\, violence\, injustice\, nature\, and love can be reflected within ourselves while we are looking and creating. DESCRIPTION:Looking for a fun experimental photography project you can do at home? Try making your own pinhole camera! Join analog photo enthusiast and Fleisher teaching artist Alex Orgera for a demonstration on how to turn a used household object into a DIY camera. Watch as Alex makes a camera out of an oatmeal container in real time while discussing tips for getting the camera light tight\, drilling the pinhole\, and loading and exposing an image. She’ll also share some of her own pinhole photographs\, along with a tour of the handmade cameras that made them. \nAlexandra Orgera is a photographer living and working in Philadelphia. After receiving her B.A. in science and humanities from Carnegie Mellon University\, she pursued the study of photography through coursework at Universität der Künste\, University of the Arts\, and Project Basho\, and in 2015\, she co-founded The Halide Project\, an organization dedicated to traditional and alternative process photography. DESCRIPTION:Video is a regular part of our lives and used by a wide variety of artists today. But\, when did video art come on the scene? What was the difference between video art and experimental film? This lecture will address these and many other questions and will introduce participants to canonical scholarship and works. As we consider these histories\, we will also ask what and who has been included\, what or who has been excluded\, and will speculate together about what video art histories of the future could look like.  \nAbout the presenter:\nSuzanne L. Seesman is a Philadelphia-based artist\, writer\, and curator. Her work experiences in education\, labor rights\, cooperative organizing\, and the service industry have a significant influence on her writing and making. Suzanne holds a BFA in sculpture from Ohio University and an MFA from Tyler School of Art and has received awards in recognition and support of her work\, including the Cloud Artist Prize and The Ilya and Emilia Kabakov Fellowship. During the summer of 2015\, she was an artist in residence at The International Ceramics Studio (ICS) in Kecskemet\, Hungary\, and in 2017 She was an artist in residence at the Vermont Studio Center. She teaches courses in visual studies at Tyler School of Art and is an alumnus of the collectively run gallery Vox Populi. How can art ignite problem solving and creative solutions? \nDavid began exploring his talent as an artist in 2017 at the age of 71\, following 10 years of increasingly severe health issues\, including battles against three kinds of cancer. His life’s work as an educator encouraged adults to reflect on and learn from their experiences. In this\, his first formal exhibit\, David presents paintings that are reflections of his own life and work in New York\, West Virginia\, and Ohio as a community organizer\, factory worker\, and adult educator. \nKatie Hulihan will be moderating this talk. SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Painting the Figure in the Russian Academic Style
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a demonstration with teaching artist Sasha Budayev of painting the figure in the manner of the Russian Academic School. Sasha will cover the conception of choice-making\, one of the fundamental issues in the Russian Academic art tradition. We’ll also learn about composition\, anatomy\, and specifics of painting from a photograph versus painting from life. \nSasha was born in 1988 in Minsk\, Belarus. From 2004 through 2008 he studied painting at Minsk State Art College. From 2008 through 2014 he also studied at the Saint-Petersburg Academy of Art (Repin Academy). He studied contemporary art and critical theory at the School of Engaged Art Chto Delat\, Saint-Petersburg\, and the School of a Young Artist ProArte\, Saint-Petersburg. As a third-year student\, he started to teach academic painting and drawing from life as well as composition at art schools and ateliers. For the 2017-2018 academic year\, he taught drawing and painting at Minsk State Art College. You will receive a URL to join the event after you complete the registration process. \nAbout the presenter:\nJohn Sevcik’s paintings and drawings have been widely exhibited\, including shows at HOUSEGallery\, the Cheltenham Center for the Arts\,  Somerville Manning Gallery (Greenville\, DE)\, Newman Galleries (Bryn Mawr and Philadelphia)\, Kevin Butler Gallery (Martha’s Vineyard)\, Pringle Gallery (Princeton)\, the Youngdam Hanji Art Museum in South Korea\, and many others. Additionally\, his paintings have twice been featured in the juried periodical New American Paintings. \nJohn brings a wide range of teaching experience to Fleisher’s studios\, having previously taught courses at The Delaware Art Museum\, the Cheltenham Center for the Arts\, Immaculata University\, Delaware College of Art and Design\, and Bucks County Community College.
