SUMMARY:Workshop: Ceramics: Raku (3 Day + Firing)
DESCRIPTION:In this special workshop you will explore raku\, an exciting and instinctive rapid firing process. Bisque work is taken from the kiln glowing red hot and vessels or sculptures are placed into organic matter and starved of oxygen to create vibrant colors and surface effects within the glaze and clay. In the studio\, students will explore a variety of techniques to create thrown and hand built forms. Whether you work with vessels or sculpture\, students will explore how different techniques\, including raku\, can make the surface of your work come alive. This immersive will be useful to the advanced beginner as well as more experienced students. Experienced students are encouraged to contact the Manager of Adult Education at adulteducation@fleisher.org to connect with the instructor about additional materials\, instructions\, or questions. \nClass will meet Monday\, 11/16 – Wednesday\, 11/18 from 1 to 4pm in Fleisher’s Ceramic Studio to create thrown and hand built forms for the raku firing. There will be two additional Open Studio days to finish work (no new work should be made on these days). Open Studio is scheduled for Thursday\, 11/19 and Friday\, 11/20 from 1 to 4 pm. All work must be on the shelf for bisque firing by 4pm Friday\, 11/20. Students are allowed up to 5 pieces in the raku firing. If students make additional work\, it can be glazed and fired through Fleisher during open studio hours (see firing schedule below). \nRaku Firing will take place on Sunday\, 12/6 (rain date 12/13) at Allens Lane Art Center from 10am to 4pm. Students are responsible for their own transportation to Allens Lane\, artwork will be transported by Fleisher. All work will be glazed on-site at Allens Lane Art Center during the Raku Firing session.

DESCRIPTION:Here is your chance to have a hands-on immersion into instant filmmaking! In two 8-hour sessions\, you will learn the essentials of how to use a Super 8 movie camera\, film in the colorful environs of South Philadelphia\, and hand develop the roll! \nBut\, that’s not all! The next day\, we will view the films and later print images of individual still frames and strips from them! There are no prerequisites for this offering\, which is open to students at all levels. \nWhat You Will Learn:\n– The essential skills of how to use a Super 8 camera (which will be provided\, but feel free to bring your working camera) including getting the right exposure settings.\n– How to develop their own film in a quick and hands-on way.\n– A demo on color photograms: an image made without a camera by placing objects directly onto the surface of photographic paper and then exposing it to light.\n– Furthering the photogram lesson\, students will print images utilizing the RA-4 reversal technique- in a color darkroom\, a rare opportunity. SUMMARY:Wax and Fire: Jewelry Immersive
DESCRIPTION:This special immersive workshop offers a focused introduction to relief carving and casting techniques used in contemporary jewelry practice. Led by professional jeweler Maureen\, participants will learn how to carve wax and prepare designs for the lost wax casting process. The immersive will include a field trip to Philadelphia’s Jeweler’s Row to outsource professional wax casting services (at an additional fee). \nIn the studio\, students will explore sand casting and cuttlefish casting techniques to create unique objects\, carvings\, and wearable forms. Through hands-on demonstrations and guided projects\, participants will develop an understanding of how carved imagery can be translated into finished metal jewelry. There are no prerequisites for this offering\, which is open to students at all levels. \nWhat You Will Learn:\n– How to operate your 35mm camera settings for greater control\n– How to develop color film\, and how to print from negatives\n– How to print and manipulate color images in the darkroom \nStudents with more experience will work alongside the instructor to finesse their color prints with knowledge of printing techniques such as dodging and burning\, using contrast filters\, etc.
