SUMMARY:Fall Registration Opens for Creative Labs
DESCRIPTION:Creative Labs runs Monday – Friday\, 3:00 – 6:00 pm \nSet in Fleisher’s historic buildings and drawing from 125 years of experience providing art education to children and youth\, the Creative Labs program offers young people in kindergarten through fifth grade a nourishing and fun after-school experience. With access to child-friendly art studios\, a dance floor in the Sanctuary\, the Children’s Garden\, and Palumbo Park right next door\, Fleisher’s faculty and staff create engaging and age-appropriate curricula using art to encourage creativity\, develop critical thinking\, and grow participants’ confidence as young artists. \nCreative Labs offers sessions featuring a wide range of media—including Painting and Drawing\, Mixed Media\, Animation\, Fiber Arts\, Sculpture\, and Movement—led by teaching artists incorporating diverse cultural artistic practices into hands-on activities. Each day\, participants will also have the opportunity to enjoy a snack\, engage in playtime\, and receive assistance with their homework between 3:00 and 4:00 pm. Sliding-scale options are now available for Creative Labs\, tuition varies from $60 fleisher.org to $450 per 10-week class based on financial capacity. Click here for more information.

SUMMARY:Queer Art: Past and Present: Queer Feminist Transnational Artistic/Curatorial Practices 
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Found in Translation series funded by the PA Humanities and National Endowment for the Humanities\, Fleisher Art Memorial and William Way are proud to present Queer Art: Past and Present\, a series of lectures exploring Queer art histories and contemporary practices and aesthetics through the voices of five renowned art historians and artists. The lecture series will take place on Zoom and live Spanish interpretation will be provided.   \nFound in Translation is a free series of art history and critical theory workshops organized by Fleisher in partnership with several cultural institutions throughout Philadelphia. The series specifically focuses on centering BIPOC and Queer voices\, reflecting a more inclusive view of the communities we work with. Found in Translation\, aligned with Fleisher’s mission of making art more accessible through our education and community programs\, brings these valuable perspectives to a broader public.  \nAlpesh Kantilal Patel will explore the traveling exhibition WOMEN 我們\,\, featured in Shanghai (2011)\, San Francisco (2012)\, and Miami Beach (2013). In addition\, Alpesh will discuss connections between artworks exploring queer absences in archives by US-based lesbian-identified artist Tina Takemoto and Estonia-based Jannus Samma.   \nAlpesh Kantilal Patel is an associate professor of contemporary art and visual culture at Tyler School of Art and Architecture\, Temple University. His art historical scholarship\, curating\, and criticism reflect his queer\, anti-racist\, and transnational approach to contemporary art. He is the author of Productive failure: Writing queer transnational South Asian art histories (2017) and co-editor of both Storytellers of Art Histories (2022) and Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art’s special issue commemorating Okwui Enwezor (2021). His research has been supported by grants and fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation\, Arts Council England\, National Endowment of Humanities\, Cranbrook Academy of Art\, New York University\, and the Institute of Advanced Studies at Loughborough University\, England.   \nAbout William Way  \nWilliam Way seeks to engage and support the diverse LGBTQIA+ communities in the greater Philadelphia area through arts & culture\, empowerment\, and community connections. SUMMARY:Queer Art: Past and Present: Contemporary Queer Artists of Color

The lecture series will take place on Zoom and live Spanish interpretation will be provided.   \nFound in Translation is a free series of art history and critical theory workshops organized by Fleisher in partnership with several cultural institutions throughout Philadelphia. The series specifically focuses on centering BIPOC and Queer voices\, reflecting a more inclusive view of the communities we work with. Found in Translation\, aligned with Fleisher’s mission of making art more accessible through our education and community programs\, brings these valuable perspectives to a broader public.  \nContemporary artists of color contest the whiteness and colonial legacies of ‘queerness’ and do so on a global stage. In addition to such contestations\, queer of color art and visual culture render queer more capacious with the capacity to imagine otherwise. From the importance of genre such as portraiture to the critical valence of certain materialities\, Bissonauth asks: how might a queer of color gaze incite another way of seeing; how do such works of art help us see differently?   \nThis presentation does not adhere to a particular chronology; rather\, I approach the material thematically. Furthermore\, this presentation mostly draws on contemporary examples (1980s onwards) alongside some historical sources that aim to shed light on transnational perspectives on queer\, feminist\, and transgender artmaking and aesthetic theory.  \n  Dr. Natasha Bissonauth teaches Art History at York University in Toronto. Her research centers queer\, trans\, and feminist artists of color with expertise in South Asia and its diasporas. Publications include Sunil Gupta’s Sun City: An Exercise in Camping Orientalism (Art Journal\, 2019)\, The Future of Museological Display: Chitra Ganesh’s Speculative Encounters (book chapter in Museums\, Sexuality\, and Gender Activism\, 2020)\, and The Dissent of Play: Lotahs in the Museum (South Asia Journal\, 2020). Recent research interests expand upon indenture studies\, archival work\, and material culture. She is currently working on a book project that looks at how contemporary artists remake aesthetic categories through archival returns. In doing so with a transnational scope of what ‘South Asia’ as a category could be\, she ultimately pursues kinship across Black and Brown art histories.      \nAbout William Way  \nWilliam Way seeks to engage and support the diverse LGBTQIA+ communities in the greater Philadelphia area through arts & culture\, empowerment\, and community connections. Beginning with the work of Harriet Hosmer through such defining figures as Thomas Eakins\, Charles Demuth\, Georgia O’Keeffe\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Jasper Johns\, Agnes Martin\, and Andy Warhol\, Jonathan Katz outlines how it was queer artists who represented the US to itself.   \nJonathan D. Katz is an art historian\, curator and queer activist. Currently an Associate Professor of Practice in the History of Art and Gender\, Sexuality\, and Women’s Studies at the University of Pennsylvania\, Katz is a pioneering figure in the development of a queer art history\, and author of a number of books and articles.  As a scholar of modern and contemporary art\, Katz is responsible for many of the first queer studies of such defining artists as Georgia O’Keeffe\, Jasper Johns\, Leon Polk Smith\, Ellsworth Kelly\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Richard Hamilton\, Yayoi Kusama\, Cy Twombly\, Agnes Martin\, Robert Indiana\, and a number of others. Katz is now completing two new books\, Hiding in Plain Sight: On the Queerness of Contemporary Art and The Silent Camp: Jasper Johns\, Robert Rauschenberg and the Cold War. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a closing reception to celebrate the work featured in our Annual Young Artists Exhibition\, highlighting work from students enrolled in the Fleisher’s Saturday Young Artists Program\, Teen Lounge\, and Community Partners in the Arts residencies. \nThe event will also include a ceremony announcing the 2022 recipient of the Ella King Torrey Award. Established by Ella Russell Torrey in honor of the contributions her daughter Ella King Torrey made to the community\, the Young Artist Award supports the continued development of a young artist between the ages of 14 and 19. The Ella King Torrey Young Artist Award celebrates Ella’s joy\, excitement and commitment to artists by encouraging exceptional teenage students at Fleisher.
