SUMMARY:Fleisher From a Distance: Nigerian and Ghanaian Pottery and Surface Design
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion about the traditional practice of Nigerian and Ghanaian Pottery with teaching artist Robin Williams Turnage. We’ll look at the history and traditional practice of handbuilding pottery in both cultures\, touch on the techniques involved including surface decoration\, and view a variety of examples. \nRobin Williams-Turnage is an artist with many talents and has been an award-winning student at Fleisher and a teacher in the adult\, Teen Lounge and the Saturday Young Artists Program for many years. Presently\, in her personal work\, she chooses to focus on ceramics. Robin is currently an associate at The Clay Studio as well as a teacher of Traditional Nigerian and Ghanaian Pottery with Jihan Thomas at Fleisher. \nRobin’s art has always reflected an African aesthetic. Currently\, she is working in the production of porcelain tableware with an African influence. Robin has exhibited her work more actively in recent years in places like the gallery at The Clay Studio\, Fleisher\, The Colored Girls Museum\, and with The Drummond Art Legacy. \nThis demonstration is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 but is limited to maximum number of 100 participants. Advanced registration is required. The tour will be hosted through Zoom\, which can be accessed on desktop and laptop computers\, as well as mobile devices. We highly recommend downloading the Zoom app to your device in advance. You will receive a URL to join the demonstration after you complete the registration process.
