Basic Drawing

This class is recommended for anyone coming to Fleisher with no previous drawing instruction or experience. You will be led step-by-step how to begin a drawing starting with the fundamentals: line and tone. In each class we will build on the skills practiced in the previous class. By drawing from imagination, copying and from direct observation you will begin to gain a vocabulary in the language of drawing. You will learn to see in a whole new way. We will work primarily in pencil, some pen and charcoal.

Main Concepts covered include composition, design, tone, line, texture and perspective.

To make our classes and workshops accessible to everyone, Fleisher offers tuition assistance every term so that everyone can join our creative community. We have recently streamlined the application process, making it even quicker and easier. Tuition assistance applications can be completed once registration is open by clicking here. The deadline to apply for fall term assistance is Monday, August 29th. Tuition assistance notifications will be sent by Friday, September 2nd.

Required supplies:

  • Strathmore Drawing paper series 300 – 14×17 medium surface

  • Drawing pencils (Box) Staedtler HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, 7B, 8B

  • Kneaded eraser

  • Staedtler eraser

  • Q tips

  • 2” brush or similar size/synthetic brushes (Lowe’s/Home Depot)

  • Small plastic container for trash

  • Ruler

  • Prismacolor Colored Pencils (box of 24 pencils)

  • General’s Charcoal Pencils box of 4: Soft, Medium, Hard + White

  • Black Sharpie Ultra Fine Point

  • Synthetic Flat brush #4

  • A Printer machine is required for this class (students will be asked to make photocopies of templates and preparatory drawing schemes sent every week by the instructor).
