Boom Times! American Indie Film in the 1990s (tuition-free)

The Sundance success of Steven Soderburgh’s 1989 film SEX LIES & VIDEOTAPES set off a industry-wide search for filmmaking talent outside of the Hollywood system and led to a decade of activity that allowed a number of diverse filmmakers a chance to pursue their auteurist film vision. We’ll examine the cultural winds blowing at the time, discuss the varied trajectories of the filmmakers’ careers and look at four vivid films that staked their own personal stamp on the landscape of American cinema.
