Ceramics: Handbuilding

Come learn the basic techniques of hand-building and sculptural design in ceramics. Each session will include time for instruction, and for practicing new techniques. Concepts and theories of 3D and 2D design will be covered along with ideas of form and function. Let your hands learn to do whatever your mind can dream up!

Participants must have a valid Fleisher membership. Please note that our tuition-free classes for adults fill very quickly. What you will learn:

  • Basic techniques for hand-building: slab construction, scoring, carving

  • Sculptural concepts including additive and reductive processes

  • Basic glaze techniques

  • Form and function

Required supplies:

  • The studio fee is for the use of studio materials, glazing, and firing. You are required to purchase clay (available at the front desk) along with some additional supplies.

  • Hard fettling knife

  • Small plastic container for slip

  • 1/4-inch inexpensive brush for applying slip

  • One-inch soft brush for glaze

  • Clean-up sponge

  • Needle tool

  • Soft rubber scraper

  • Plastic bags (the type used by dry cleaners)
