Ceramics: Handbuilding (five-session online workshop)

In this online class, you will learn the basic techniques of hand-building and sculptural design in ceramics. Each session will include time for instruction, and for practicing new techniques. Concepts and theories of 3D and 2D design will be covered along with ideas of form and function. Let your hands learn to do whatever your mind can dream up! You can purchase clay at Fleisher and drop off your finished work to get it fired.

Special Notes
This is an online class hosted through Zoom. We recommend that you download the free Zoom application on your computer, phone, or tablet in advance of the first class. Within 48 hours of registration, you will receive a confirmation email containing a link to join the course via Zoom. The same link will be used each week.

What you will learn:

  • Basic techniques for hand-building: pinch, coil, soft slab and hard slab construction, scoring, carving

  • Sculptural concepts including additive and reductive processes

  • Form and function

Required supplies:

  • Hard fettling knife

  • Clean-up sponge

  • Needle tool

  • Soft rubber rib/scraper

  • Wooden knife tool

  • Metal fork

  • Soft plastic bags

  • Wire cutter

  • Wooden or canvas-covered board to work on

  • Most of these supplies come with the basic “pottery tool kit” available from art supply stores and/or online
