Children’s Book Illustration

Do you love children’s books? Here is your chance to explore the possibilities of the medium. This workshop will provide a step by step process to learn how to compose an illustrated children’s book. You will begin with an inspiration, e.g. a story, poem, song or any other idea appropriate for a children’s book. The inspiration can either be original or collected. The aim of the course is to gain the technical skill and knowledge required to complete a cover, a splash and a spread. Students are encouraged to work with any medium for their project. Students should bring their drawing and painting samples to the class at the beginning of the course.

What you will learn:

  • Basic layout for visual storytelling

  • Style selection for the composition of the book

  • Character development, color composition, and environment design

  • Basic typography

  • Understanding the extent of detailing

Required supplies:

  • Supply will depend on the project. Students are welcome to use oil, acrylic, gouache, watercolor, collage or any other medium. For layout paper, pencil and color pencil or acrylic is necessary. The final illustration can be done on paper or canvas.
