Chinese Brush Painting

This online class is designed for those who are interested in the medium, technique, culture and philosophy of this Chinese art form online. Participants will learn the basic brushwork, familiarize with the texture of Xu’an paper, ink and color applying as well as fundamental composition.

This is an online class hosted through Zoom. We recommend that you download the free Zoom application on your computer, phone, or tablet in advance of the first class. You will receive a confirmation email containing a link to join the course via Zoom. The same link will be used each week.

What you will learn:

  • Exploring the medium of brush, ink, Xuan paper, as well as colors

  • Experiencing the fundamental brushwork and techniques

  • Acquiring the four forms of Art in Chinese painting

  • Painting seasonal flowers and related writing

Required supplies:

  • For your convenience, a starting set including Xuan paper, ink, and three Chinese Painting brushes are available to purchase for $48 through Josephine’s Studio. Contact her at Josephine’s Dancing Brush Studio: 610-566-6874, or e-mail tsai7788@gmail.com.

  • Four basic brushes: S: Best Detail, M: Orchid Bamboo, Fine soft; L: Large Flow

  • Xu’an paper: semi-absorbing (4), Raw absorbing (4), Double Xu’an (4), Sumi paper for practice use

  • Pigments: watercolor tubes or Chinese chip colors (Deep Yellow, Indigo, Red, Dark Red, Burnt Sienna, Vermillion), Martin’s Bleed-Proof White

  • Ink stick and ink stone or liquid ink

  • Palettes or white dishes, water container or jar

  • A piece of felt about 20×30 inches

  • If you have watercolor related art supplies, please bring them to the class
