Chinese Brush Painting and Calligraphy
The workshop is designed for those who are interested in the medium, technique, and philosophy of the classical art form of Chinese brush painting and calligraphy. You will learn the basic brushwork, familiarize yourself with the texture of Xuan paper, learn about ink, and color application, as well as fundamental composition.
Please be advised that due to Fleisher’s Founders Award Celebration, we will not hold evening classes on June 6. This session will be made up on June 13.
What you will learn:
Exploring the medium of brush, ink, Xuan paper, as well as colors
Experiencing the fundamental brushwork and techniques
Acquiring the four forms of Art in Chinese painting
Introducing you to the Chinese lyric, and philosophy relating to the art form
Painting popular flowers and birds in different styles

Four basic brushes: S: Best Detail, M: Orchid Bamboo, Fine soft; L: Large Flow
Xu’an paper: semi-absorbing (4), Raw absorbing (4), Double Xu’an (4), Sumi paper for practice use
Pigments: watercolor tubes or Chinese chip colors (Deep Yellow, Indigo, Red, Dark Red, Burnt Sienna, Vermillion), Martin’s Bleed-Proof White
Ink stick and ink stone or liquid ink
Palettes or white dishes, water container or jar
A piece of felt about 20×30 inches
