Chinese Brush Painting: Landscapes

This online class is designed for those who are interested in the medium, technique, and philosophy of the classical art form of Chinese brush painting and calligraphy. You will learn the basic brushwork, familiarize yourself with the texture of Xuan paper, learn about ink, and color application, as well as fundamental composition. We will focus on landscape as a subject matter for this term.

What you will learn:

  • Exploring the medium of brush, ink, Xuan paper, as well as colors

  • Experiencing the fundamental brushwork and techniques

  • Acquiring the four forms of art in Chinese painting

  • Introducing you to the Chinese lyric, and philosophy relating to the artform

Required supplies:

  • Four basic brushes: S: Best Detail, M: Orchid Bamboo, Fine soft; L: Large Flow

  • Xuan paper: non-absorbed (4), absorbed raw (4), double Shuan (4), Sumi paper for practice

  • Pigments: watercolor tubes or Chinese chip colors (Deep Yellow, Indigo, Red, Dark Red, Burnt Sienna, Vermillion), Martin’s Bleed-Proof White

  • Ink stick and ink stone or liquid ink

  • Palettes or white dishes, water container or jar

  • A piece of felt about 20×30 inches

  • If you have watercolor related art supplies, please bring them to the class
