Color Theory (online, tuition-free)

This course will provide a firm foundation in color theory. Topics will include qualities of color, methods of creating contrast, color illusions, and physical and optical color mixing. Students will develop a handbook of color exercises for future reference.

Special Notes

This is an online class hosted through Zoom. We recommend that you download the free Zoom application on your computer, phone, or tablet in advance of the first class. You will receive a confirmation email containing a link to join the course via Zoom. The same link will be used each week.

What you will learn:

  • Students will understand the difference between hue, value, and chroma to identify, compare, and contrast color qualities.

  • Students will be able to accurately mix colors using warm/cool primaries.

  • Students will understand how to use color to create mood and represent emotion.

  • Students will be able to use color to create illusions of depth, transparency, and reflectance.

  • Students will create a personal color handbook/manual to use for future reference.

Required Supplies:

  • 1 spiral bound sketchbook between 5×7 and 8×10 inches as preferred*

  • ½ inch flat acrylic/watercolor brush (no oil bristle brushes!)

  • 1 small round brush for detail work

  • Palette paper pad

  • Pencil

  • Ruler

  • Glue stick

  • Scissors

  • Acrylic paints (Liquitex basics preferred) or gouache in the following colors:

    • Mars Black
    • Titanium White
    • Quinacridone Magenta
    • Cadmium Red Medium
    • Cadmium yellow medium
    • Cadmium yellow light
    • Ultramarine blue
    • Cerulean blue
