Color Theory

This course will provide a firm foundation in color theory. Topics will include qualities of color, methods of creating contrast, color illusions, and physical and optical color mixing. Students will develop a handbook of color exercises for future reference.

Participants must have a valid Fleisher membership. Please note that our tuition-free classes for adults fill very quickly. What you will learn:

  • Students will understand the difference between hue, value, and chroma to identify, compare, and contrast color qualities

  • Students will be able to accurately mix colors using warm/cool primaries

  • Students will understand how to use color to create mood and represent emotion

  • Students will be able to use color to create illusions of depth, transparency, and reflectance

  • Students will create a personal color handbook/manual to use for future reference

Required supplies:

  • One spiral bound sketchbook between 5×7 and 8×10 inches as preferred

  • ½ inch flat acrylic/watercolor brush (no oil bristle brushes!)

  • One small round brush for detail work

  • Palette paper pad

  • Pencil

  • Ruler

  • Glue stick

  • Scissors

  • Paint will be provided
