Fierce Silhouettes (grades 9-12)

Students will journey along a virtual tour of the history of silhouettes in art and embark on their own cut-paper art, monochromatic paintings, and collages. Inspired by the art collection belonging to Dr. Constance Clayton, a Philadelphia legend who advocates for African American art and culture, the tour will pause at some of the great artists associated with the Harlem Renaissance like James Lesesne Wells, Aaron Douglas, Jacob Lawrence, and Romare Bearden. It will end with the bold and unapologetic works of Neo-Expressionist Basquiat and Contemporary artist, Kara Walker. Our young artists will layer bold shapes and rhythmic color to create energetic and inspired stenciled (pochoir), painted, and collaged artworks. Students in this workshop will have the opportunity to show their work at Cherry Street Pier in the month of July!
