Fifty Years of Outrageous Musicals
The film musical, an outgrowth of the American stage, swept the world in the 1930’s but by the late sixties had fallen quickly into decline with the changing times. From there, filmmakers restruck the family-friendly musical as a place for surrealism, outsider perspectives and rock and roll. We’ll see and hear five examples from the last century and we’ll discuss the collaborators involved, unravel the themes and examine the strategies pursued in reinvigorating the movie musical form.
