Introduction to Figure Painting

As an introduction to the fundamentals of painting the figure, this class encourages careful and deliberate study of value and color in flesh painting. You will explore limited palette and develop skills for simplifying complex forms. Working from the model you will begin with small color/value sketches in oil.

  • 18 x 24-inch stretched canvas

  • Natural bristle oil brushes (flat #2, #4, #6, and #8)

  • Turpenoid

  • Oil paints:

    • Burnt Sienna
    • Titanium White
    • Ultramarine Blue
  • Additional paints (for later in the semester):

    • Cadmium Green
    • Cadmium Orange
    • Cadmium Red (Dark, Medium)
    • Cadmium Yellow
    • Naples Yellow
