Movable Books (Online, four-session workshop)

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced book maker this online workshop is your introduction to the exciting world of movable books. You will learn simple movable books, fold outs, pop-ups, rotating parts, and other types of movables.

Special Notes

This is an online class hosted through Zoom. We recommend that you download the free Zoom application on your computer, phone, or tablet in advance of the first class. Within 48 hours of registration, you will receive a confirmation email containing a link to join the course via Zoom. The same link will be used each week.

What you will learn:

  • Sources for materials, tools, and instructional guidance for future learning

  • The basic hand skills of cutting, folding and sewing various materials

  • Different papers and other materials used in bookbinding

  • A variety of movable book structures

Required supplies:

  • Here are the personal tools and supplies you will need. You will need everything to participate in the first week of class, so please feel free to email with questions.

  • Bone folder

  • Olfa cutting knife (or X-acto) with extra blades

  • Scissors

  • Awl or thin needle tool (as used for clay)

  • Self healing cutting mat

  • Metal ruler

  • Triangle

  • Pencil

  • White eraser

  • Stiff bristle brush for gluing (at least 1 inch — can be synthetic)

  • Glue stick

  • Double stick tape

  • Bookbinding glue (you will need a minimal amount, Elmers will suffice in a pinch)

  • Bookbinding thread (we don’t need a ton – thicker thread will work)

  • Stiff bristle brush for gluing (at least 1 inch can be synthetic)

  • Card stock — we will be using quite a bit of this, get yourself some fun colors or patterns

  • Decorative paper – similar crispness and thickness of copy paper

  • Various size and shape hole punches (if you have them, this would be for decorative elements)
