Portrait Painting

This oil painting course is designed to instruct and encourage both beginning and advanced students. The instructor will provide information on facial structures and do demonstrations each week. Students will go through exercises designed to strengthen their ability in obtaining proportions, recognizing facial structures, and calibrating value relationships. The ultimate goal is for students to learn a thinking process that will lead to an oil painting process that can both be logical and expressive.

What you will learn:

  • Paint handling

  • Color mixing

Required supplies:

  • One toned canvas per night (size 16×20 recommended)

  • Brushes of different shapes and sizes (the instructor uses Silver Grand Prix Bristle Filbert #4 most frequently)

  • Turpenoid (blue label) or Gamsol

  • Winsor Newton Profressional Paints: Titanium White, Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue

  • One palette knife

  • Palette

  • Paper towels or rags

  • Jars for turpenoid
