Screenprinted Soft Sculpture (six-session workshop)

In this six-week course students will learn to screen print on fabric using water based acrylic inks and create three-dimensional sculptures with their prints. The course will cover an introduction to screen printing using the photo emulsion process, as well as basic machine and hand sewing techniques. Prior screen printing and sewing experience is not necessary. Topics covered will include creating screen print positives, textile printing techniques, the trapunto quilting process, and other soft sculpture methods.

What you will learn:

  • Screenprinting acrylic ink on fabric

  • Creating screen print positives

  • Coating, burning, and reclaiming photo emulsion for screenprinting

  • Basic machine and hand sewing techniques

  • Trapunto quilting process

Required supplies:

  • All materials will be provided for the first class. Below is what you will need for the second class onward.

  • Water-based acrylic screen printing ink (note: not water soluble ink)

  • Non-stretch, smooth, fabric

  • 18 x 24 Newsprint (pad or at least 10 sheets)

  • One 18 x 24 inch clear acetate sheet

  • 8 ½ x 11 or 11 x 17 white copy paper (10 sheets)

  • Faber Castell Pitt pen or another true-black marker, assorted tip sizes pencil, eraser

  • Dish gloves

  • Apron clear packing tape

  • Thread

  • Sewing needle

  • Stitch ripper

  • Sewing pins (at least five)

  • Scissors

  • Polyester batting

  • Polyester fiber fill
