Fleisher From a Distance: Drawing the Figure

Join us for a figure drawing demonstration with teaching artist Bernard Collins. We’ll discuss Bernard’s approach to drawing the figure, explore anatomical proportions, gesture, and achieving a likeness. Bring a pencil and paper to follow along or just sit back and enjoy the demonstration.

Bernard Collins’ paintings are a reflection of his desire to understand the human body and soul. As an African American artist he has had to balance his educational background which has been firmly grounded in European (traditional) techniques such as glazing, under-painting, etc. and his desire to capture the liveliness and innovation that is present in African American culture. The painted faces that have become important to his body of work represent the raw creative energy that pulses within all people of color. His models have always been his fellow artists, writers, poets, rappers, singers etc. In the future he wants to expand this body of work to include some very young and elderly subjects.

This demonstration is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 but is limited to maximum number of 100 participants. Advanced registration is required. The tour will be hosted through Zoom, which can be accessed on desktop and laptop computers, as well as mobile devices. We highly recommend downloading the Zoom app to your device in advance. You will receive a URL to join the demonstration after you complete the registration process.
