Fleisher From a Distance: Studio Tour with Darla Jackson

Join us Wednesday, April 1, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. as Fleisher launches its series of online learning and community building programs, Fleisher From a Distance. We’ll begin with an exciting tour of Darla Jackson’s sculpture studio. During the tour, you will see where Darla creates her work, see some of the new pieces she has created, and ask questions about her work and process.

Since her graduation from Moore College of Art & Design in 2003, Darla has been teaching and exhibiting her work in Philadelphia and beyond. Her work has been exhibited at the Philadelphia Art Alliance, Seraphin Gallery, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and venues in California, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., and Belgium. For more than 12 years, Darla has led popular Fleisher classes such as Sculptural Forms and Animal Sculpture and was featured in Fleisher’s galleries as a Wind Challenge artist. In 2011, Darla was named a winner of the Knight Arts Challenge Philadelphia.

“My sculpture is an exploration of human emotions where I use animal forms as stand ins for humans,” Darla says of her work. “In order to express these emotions, I introduce recognizable visual objects, or symbols, and combine them with other elements to create a duality. Through the anthropomorphism of animals, use of strong body language and symbolism, I can convey these emotions and ideas in a way that is more approachable for viewers. The end result is familiarity with an oddness that makes it compelling.”

This tour is free and open to the public, but it is limited to maximum number of 100 participants.
