Faculty Spotlight: Joyce Mansfield
At the heart of Fleisher are the incredible teaching artists who inspire creativity in our community every day. In this series, we’re sitting down with our faculty members for a quick Q&A to learn more about their artistic journeys, what fuels their practice, and the joy they find in teaching at Fleisher.
Today we sit down with Joyce Mansfield.
How did you first discover your passion for art?
I discovered my passion for art when I was in elementary school. I had a wonderful art teacher who exposed me to the joy of art! Her class was so inviting, and I found a way to creatively express myself as a shy child.
What path led you to becoming a teaching artist?
I love working with children. I received my BFA and teaching certification from Tyler School of Art. I went on to receive my MFA from The University of Pennsylvania. After graduation, I became an art teacher for the school district of Philadelphia. I started attending an art group hosted by a professor from Tyler. At one of the meetings a fellow artist shared that he was moving out of state and there would be a teaching position open at Fleisher. I went for the interview and started working at Fleisher shortly thereafter.
Can you walk me through your creative process when starting a new piece.
Most of my artwork is based on biblical themes. In preparation, I read the bible and listen to gospel music before and while working on my collages. I choose the papers, fabric, etc and then cut and assemble them into my vision.
How does your own process influence the way you teach?
I enjoy creating mixed media collages. It influences the way I teach because I encourage students to try and combine various art materials in their art. I also play music on my iPad for them during class.
What do you love most about teaching at Fleisher?
My students! I love their enthusiasm and energy. I love that they are not intimidated about trying new things. Once they are shown examples, they are confident enough to explore the materials and create!
What do you hope students take away from their time with you?
Be kind. Create art. Make new friends. Explore materials in a safe manner. Have fun!
