Common Space: Sattriya Dance Company

Fleisher’s new Common Space initiative gives local organizations and artist collectives ‘the keys’ to Fleisher’s historic Sanctuary to present culturally diverse, community-driven projects. Designed to support Philadelphia-area performance artists by providing access to a unique venue and to help cultivate new audiences for their work, Common Space embodies our founder’s vision of the Sanctuary as a public space devoted to the appreciation and pursuit of art. All programs in this series are free and open to the public.

Sattriya Dance Company will present a 500-year-old tradition that celebrates the life and incarnations of the flute playing hindu god Krishna. The company will showcase Sattriya’s journey from its practice in the Sattras to the performance stage. Sattriya Dance Company is based in Philadelphia. Since 2009, the company’s mission has been to promote, document, and present Sattriya globally. Notable performance venues include: Symphony Space (NYC), IAAC’s Erasing Borders (NYC), Library of Congress (Washington DC), Indian Embassy (Mexico), Nehru Center (London), Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco), India Habitat Center (Delhi), Kalaghoda Festival (Mumbai), Philadelphia Museum of Art and Esplanade (Singapore).
